i just got a computer and want to start making and recording music. i ve been into rap for a while but want to make my own beats and record at home. what will i need to get started. i dont want to spend booku bucks by i think i was disallusioned by thinking all i needed was a good cakewalk program and a mic. please help. thanks

Alot of people I know use Fruity Loops. Even 9th wonder of Little Brother uses the program. All you need is a midi controller($99 and up) and the program. I don't know much about it but it is pretty inexpensive. The first thing I got was a midi controller, firwire 410 and sonar4 producer ed. I quickly learned if you dont understand the basics of production it will confuse you to no end. I have heard that fruity is very easy to learn. Also I have learned from experience, you want to choose your gear according to your style of production. If you want a cheap hardware sampler go with the Roland sp 505 it can teach you a lot of basics and if you have some one who is good at mixing you can make that thing sound like an MPC 2000 xl. Also when your ready get a really good set of monitors. I'm learning that make your peice is only half the battle, mixing is crucial.

If you want to go with a more expensive program I would suggest get a really nice soundcard(internal or external), it will decrease your latency. Also really pay attention to the specs on the software, that is really important.

Good Luck from 1 newbie to another.
