I'm getting a lot of noise on my recordings. Ive messed with the volume controls to no avail. I have a stock compaq presario desktop that uses ESS Audio 1000 for recording and playback. I have a Sony mic that converts to an 1/8" plug. I get nothing using the mic on line-in. I realize this set-up is lame, but it has to do for now. Is the problem more likely to be the mike, or the soundcard? Are there any soundcards available for under $100? I don't expect perfection, but this noise is un-acceptable. I appreciate any feedback. An example of the noise is heard here especially just before the guitar starts on the song-"Counting waves":.....http://www.nowhereradio.com/attaboy/singles
Thanks people.

Plug the mic into the "Mic In" jack, not the "Line In"

you need a soundcard...if you are using the stock soundcard and a dynamic mic to record...you will get alot of hiss...i used to get a lot of hiss and i use a mixer, but i turned it down as much as i could on the main gain, and i turned the line level on my computer control down as much as i could also. i turned them down as far as i could and still get a good recording (volumet), and that helped everything. plus your computer makes noise, your walls vibrate, air-conditioner. all that stuff contributes.
