I'm just looking to put together a demo with vocals and a guitar. What do I need? Once I buy the software, do I connect a mic in the USB port, Firewire, etc? Or does anyone have a simple combination that worked for their PC.

I'll take a shot at it, but first- acoustic or electric guitar, or do you use both? The answer to that question seriously impacts your options. Also- are you willing and able to play the guitar onto one track without singing, and then overdub the vocals, or is it necessary to play both at the same time? Other questions- What kind of available budget do you have to work with, what kind of room do you have to work with, what kind of guitars and other equipment do you already own, and what are the specs on the available computer and its sound card? Answer all of that, and lots of people can help you. Be forewarned- there are a lot of ways to skin that cat, and you are going to get a bunch of answers that will not be the same.-Richie

Thanks for the guidance. Heres the deal,
1) My budget is about 300 bucks.
2) I'm recording with an acoustic only as of now. I'd like to be able to add some artificial drum beats if the software provides that.
3) I don't really know much about my computers sound card but the computer is only a couple years old so hopefully it is reletivly up to date in terms of compatability with new recording technology.
4) recording guitar and vocals seperately is fine.
5) I'm looking for the best quality set-up but also the easiest to use.

thanks for the suggestions. what exactly is all that though. is the USB preamp a mic u connect to the USB? or is it one of those boxes u hook a mic up to?

with Dwarfs suggestion this is how it would go:
Studio Projects B1 (Microphone) -> XLR Microphone Cable -> Tascam Usb Unit -> Usb cable -> Computer

I would reccomend reading this:
http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm
and reading the book "an idiots guide to home recording" it will help you out a lot :)

Thanks for the help. 2 questions

1) whats the price range of all this
2) that set-up sounds pretty simple which is what I'm looking for. What software would require the least research and reading to get the hang of, but still be able to record multiple tracks.
