Newbie first song....

I think the overall recording sound is really pro - sounding. The vocals and keyboards are clean and clear which is IMHO important. Your performance is good too - reminds me of Billy Joel. Which leads me to my only suggestion - add some more effects and compression to the mix, to beef it up a bit.....

:) :D :) :D

Very nicely done vocal.

The instrumental backing needs more in the arrangement I think. The quality of the vocal really deserves a high quality backing. You might consider putting it up here as a collaboration. You could get some nicely done backing parts that way.

Thanks for the responses!

Timothy and ido, thank you for the thoughts. The song and recording had to be put together quickly as a benefit CD for a friend in need and not being much of a piano player wanted to add some some backing as you mentioned (ie. acoustic guitar or drum set). Unfortunately I ran out of time and money! :) (This DAW thing is a little more expensive than I can afford, but a heckuva a lot less than expected!) I will work on the beef as you suggested ido.

Thanks again!

Ajgdavis, very nicely done! I agree that the mix overall could use some embellishment and depth, but the song and the performance (especially vox) are very good!

Would love to hear more! :)

Good recording... really good voice... newbie, you say? first recording, you say? &^%@#^%$ mumble mumble... been doing this stuff for 18 years, and this guy puts out a fine recording on the first shot? !@#$%^& ;)

Very nice recording. Needs some backing though. String section through out or something.
A very slight nice reverb across the entire mix to put you in a space might help. It's a little to sterile for me. I don't really much of the sound of a room.
Wish I could get my recordings so clean and loose some room :D
Need to hang on that last note too.

Just my opinion.

Mind if I post a link to your song with a little verb on it. I just did it to see. It's not on a public server or anything like that.

Thanks again!

Freudian - go ahead, no problem and thanks for the opinion!

Nick .. :) ..I have been reading the BBS for about a year now as I have tried to save for the equipment. So first song, yes, but, alot of studying too! Plus, with the stuff available today, I'm guessing it is probably a little easier to get started than it was 18 years ago!

Thanks to Chris for the positive feedback as well! Hope to try some of the recommendations tonight!

Cool, A/B this. all I did was a little verb on the whole mix.

Sounds like the file is corrupted a bit. It has a few skips in it. you get the sound though.

********Edit: Apperantly quicktime does not like this file. it's fine in windows media. it's a 192kbps file. I never do those, usually 320kbps. I'll try to make a 128kbps or a 320 and replace the file. For now I'd save the file and open it with windows media.*************

I like it.

Freud...sounds good. I was afraid to do anything to the mix as I didn't want it to sound to manufactured, but I like the extra verb.

Mind if I ask what type of software you used to add the verb?

Thanks again

Yea I agree...this sounds good...just a little reverb and youll be set...The song is good by itself but could be more interesting with some soft drums, guitar leads etc...but thats just my opinion...

VERY GOOD JOB though!,

I'm using Waves Rverb. That's just the default verb that comes up when you start the plug. I've got it at 10% wet. It's a hair much when just the vocals are going or the reverb tail is in a place with no piano. I think it smoothed it up a bit though. It doesn't sound so much like you need to continue or bring the strings back in to the song either.I personally would do something, but that's me. It sounds like you left a spot for something though.

I think the verb helped the ending a tad too. You know that end begs for the piano to break where it does and then come back in with the last word and play you out gently. Sort of a short slowing cadance out.

That's just me too;) One thing's for sure. I keep seeing things to do and that means huge potential in my book. I think producer would love to get his hands on this and have his way with it;)

Nice..

I like your thought on the ending. I will have to work on that and see if I can make it as nice as you made it sound! Also, I did leave some room for a few more things, just ran out of time! I tried an acoustic, but I have a cheap Alvarez and only a vocal mic, so I was having trouble making it sound good. Left it out rather than ruining the mix. I'll play around with some of the before mentioned ideas....once again, thanks.
