Firstly this is not an original ...its a cover of a Dave Matthews Song called Crash Into Me ....basically i wanted to try out 2 different mics and see what kind of sound i could get from them

Crash Into Me

Beware - I AM NOT A SINGER - but i sang in this song for experimental reasons only ...to see what the mic would sound like ...also i can't sing in higher octaves so its very low singing ...

i used a sennheiser e845 for Vox - added a bit of compresion , Reverb and Eq

I recorded 3 guitar (epiphone les paul) tracks 0ne with the Sennheiser e845....another with a crappy £20 / $40 dynamic mic ....just to get a different tone

I panned these 2 guitars L/R 75 and added some light reverb

then i added a 3rd guitar track with my Boss GT-6 FX Pedal and added a little reverb .....

Please be as honest as you want ...like i said i'm not a singer ....just wanted to see what you guys thought of my mixing and mic sound quality.... and if you think i've massacred the song ..don't be afraid to say (By the Way i'm Irish - thus the accent)

Actually, good sounds. I liked the tune. Seems mixed pretty well. You sing better than I do.

You are too kind Dogman ...lol

I'm just worried whether or not the mixing is up to scratch...and if theres any advice as to how i could have done it better ...i know the 3rd guitar was rushed a bit so it needs retracked ....

The mix could be MUCH better....

Sonically, it's extremely dark and very muddy-sounding, plus you've got waaaaay too much reverb on everything.

Yeah i think i understand what you mean....How exactly do i get rid of that Muddy sound ....? i tried mcing the guitar from different positions ...and it ended up either being too right and sharp and hurt my ears to listen to ....and then this was the other extreme - it was way too mud and the notes on the guitar weren't very distinct and clear ....(the reverb probably didn't help matters)

I know the vocals aren't up to scratch ......but like it said this was just an experiment....

By the Way guys I am going to see Velvet Revolver tonite Yeeeehaaaaaaw :D

Lurgan, is it possible to post a version with only a touch of reverb? The large amount of reverb is muddying it up pretty much. Beyond that, experiment with very slight reductions in the 300-350 Hz range in various tracks to see what thins it down just a little without ruining the richness of the prominent parts. I’m often guilty of the same emphasis in the lower mids. Hard to avoid sometimes.

thanks for the feedback Tim....I'm a bit drunk....just back from the Velvet Revolver Gig ....wow I saw SLASH!!!!! amazing!!!!!!

anyway ....yeah i understand how it got so muddy ....(reverb) ....although i stll need to figure out how to mic my amp .....its either too close and bright / sharp (hurts ears) or else i mic it from 3 feet away and its too muddy and you can't make the notes out....??? anyone else have the same porblem and if so .....how did you overcome them?

Tim when i sober up i will retarck the song ...try and make it less muddy and try and sing in the next octave...although i doubt it will sound much better lol

its either too close and bright / sharp

Is is still too bright when you position the mic near the outer edge of the speaker cone? You probably already know the technique of controlling brightness that way - brighter in the center of the cone, less so nearer the edge. Mic angle makes a big difference too. An sm57 close and at the cone's edge can sound great.

thanks Tim ...if i am going to take this serious i will have to invest in some decent equipment and an sm 57 is next on my list on priorities....

my friend is going to lend me an sm 57 and i have been advised by a friend to place it inside my banjo (attached to the trust rod).....to get a good banjo sound ...so that should be fun .....i'll keep u guys posted on the rumble 3 thread as to how i get on
