Newbie Cubase question

Hi,

I've just started using cubase VST/24 (Ver 3.7) and I've come across a problem with VST plugins.

I've enabled a channel and inserted a 16 bit stereo wav file. I've then hit the fx/eq button so that I can apply a VST effect to the sample.

The problem is, although it's a stereo sample I only have an "insert" button for the left channel. If I hit this button and enable a VST effect, the effect only applies to the left channel and the right channel remains unaltered. All other controls (volume etc) seem to apply to both channels.

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Is the channel/track that you enabled a stereo track? I don't know about Cubasis VST 24, but in SE you can click on the little button that has either one or two circles in it to toggle between a mono and stereo track.
 
Yeah. Even if I don't set it manually, it is set to stereo automatically when I import the wav file, then doesn't allow me to change back to mono.

It seems that everything other than the VST section is treating the left and right channels as linked. If I could somehow unlink them maybe that would fix the problem, but I can't see anything to do this
 
Are you sure you selected a stereo plug-in? I use Cubase VST also, and I don't recall two distinct buttons for fx on a stereo track. Also, how is the track panned? Sometimes, I notice that in order to hear everything correctly, I have to move the pan back and forth a few times. Ditto for the fader. Seems to be a quirk in Cubase.
 
I'm not sure if it's a stereo plugin, I just assumed it was. I can check later, how do I tell?

As for pan, I didn't touch this so it will be at the default position, which I assume is centred. I don't think pan is the problem though. If I listen to the track through headphones I can hear the left channel with the VST effect applied in my left ear, and the track with no effect in my right.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think fx plug-ins are mono unless otherwise named. For example, in my Waves plugins I'll have at least two versions of reverb - one for mono and one for stereo. I never tried to apply a mono plugin on a stereo track. Maybe I'll try that tonight and see if I get the same results you're getting.
 
Some plug-ins like the flanger, phaser and symphonic plug-ins have a stereo basis parameter that allows you to expand the stereo field of the effect's output. Some also have a stereo/mono button that allows you to toggle between stereo or mono mode. The stereo mode will send the effect in the left and right channel effectively panning the effect.

You should set up your stereo track before you import the audio. To use stereo you need to enable 2 channels, an odd channel and the next even channel.
