newbie...bass mixing

Hi..I have simple home recording gear using cool edit pro to record and mix... I have a set of inexpensive monitors that sound great with everything but Bass....you have to mix it so low in the mix that you can't hear it through the monitors....if you do mix it enough to hear it in them it is WAY loud when on a CD. What is the best way to remedy this? Will a powered sub help?. I have powered monitors and use a Box called a Direct USB-3 from Aardvark that does a great job for me.....any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

David, a sub might help, but to be honest you might still get the same affect. I used to use a Boss BR-1180, with a set of computer/ gaming speakers that came with a subwoofer, and I got it all the time. I see that you already have cheap monitors (what kind?), but it might not hurt to upgrade. All my problems changed when I got some better monitors. FWIW, get a cheap sub and try it, but don't be afraid to go out and get some half decent monitors. Small KRK's are affordable and sound pretty good, but just go to your local music store and listen to what they have. They should have a return policy, so try them out in your setup. Hope this helps!

This simply means that is what it is supposed to sound like on that speaker.
Now if it truly so low that you can not hear it then a different speaker or an addition might be needed. But it could also be that they just don't go as loud down there as you might like and/or you need to monitor quieter. No mater which, you'll still need to learn what 'balanced' is in your room.
Headphones are an option to get another view of the low end.
