newb vs midi

i've recently bitten the bullet and purchased a midi interface card, but i seem to be having a lot of issues getting my crap version of cubasis (vst?) to play back through the instruments. is there any (preferably) free software that anyone could recommend? (i'm not afraid of linux)

or maybe there's something simple that i'm not doing correctly. i don't know

More info is needed for you to get help -- what are the specs of your computer? What kind of soundcard? Desktop? Laptop? Which Windows are you running?

And a much more thorough description of the problem you are asking for help with...
 
If you're looking for midi software, and freeware, at that, try JAZZ++ from www.jazzware.com
It's easy to learn, and has decent help files, and decent features.
I haven't tried, but you can also record audio tracks.
And this software will run on a 486 with 32 meg of RAM.

I've been using it for over 3 years, and depending on your sound card, you can get more than just GM midi. I use GS Midi with my SB PCI-128. The SB uses Soundfonts. You can also midi out to a synth ( I do sometimes ) or sound module ( on wishlist )

sorry for ambiguity:

i have a 1.7 athlon machine with 768mb ram plenty of hard disk space. i have a sound blaster audigy platinum (internal). i have an alesis sr-16, a cheapass bestbuy casio and a korg ms200b. i have no problem getting a midi signal in, but have am having a horrible time getting the midi to comeback out through my devices. i don't want to use any sound banks, i like the sounds i get out of my boards.

sorry if it's a retarded question, i'm very new to this whole digital thing. thanks a lot!
 
Go to 'Settings' and bring up the Control Panel. It should have an icon for your soundcard. Use that to turn off the internal sounds and enable the external midi port on the sound card...

And johnnymegabyte has provided you with a link to a free software package - I wrestled with a early version of Cubasis on a Windows 98 machine until the blue screens started coming so thick and fast that I finally looked elsewhere. Don't feel obligated to use a software package just because you paid for it - if it's not right for you ditch it and move on.

if this doesn't sound right, i know i've switched the cabels through just about every combination i could think of
