Hey
me and my band have spent the past two weeks working on an E.P. We're going to be finished recording fairly soon so we'll be mixing it in the next few weeks. We've got the basic sound we want in rough mixes but there are a few things that are going to need tweaking. One of the things seems to be the type of reverb. We're going for a sort of mainstream pop sound but we want it to sound sort of like a modern version of new wave bands. At the moment I'm mainly just using the plate setting but the records I'm trying to emulate seem to have some delay on them. Any suggestions as to how I can get this sound? I've got an Alesis Wedge reverb unit so will it be okay to run the same reverb on all the tracks if it is of this type?

The sound I'm after is like on this record (I think it's easiest to hear on the vocals):

Delay for delay, verbs for verb.. ;)
Anyway, sounds like a triplet delay (notice it's in sync with the two-beat triplets in the chorus.. That one's up in the couple hundred ms range.

Are you doing hardware for your fx or going plugs..both?

thanks for the reply,
I'll try that delay setting tomorrow at some point. I record in analogue so I can only use hardware. I've only got one processor (Alesis Wedge) but I may be able to borrow or buy another second-hand.

yeah, reverb, delay, modulation (chorus etc.). All the standard effects

You ought to be able to get some usable stuff out of it.

Many of the "New Wave" records were using the latest(!?!) digital reverbs at the time (Lexicon, Yamaha, Eventide). Some were better than others, and all were turned up too high. :)

Carefully select some nice Plate and Room programs, make sure your sources are brightened like crazy, record very cleanly and you can get in the ballpark. A/B with some of those records to keep yourself on target.

This kind of stuff is fun to mix! I love it when clients send me those kinds of projects!
