Saved enough scratch to purchase a decent multitracker. Saw a good price on the VF80CDR (although I've already seen better prices) and bought the thing mostly because of Fostex's rep. From browsing the forum, I get some good feedback about the unit.

To anyone who owns one of these...What can I expect from it? Any tricks you could share? Anything really annoying about the machine?

My daughter has one......I got a cd from her about a month ago, it was her first attempt. From what I heard, the recording quality was excellent, but I think the fact that she was using a good condenser mic had a lot to do with it.

Don't let the manual put you off - most of it's fairly intuitive. It was a good buy - I don't think there' sbeen a single companin about it here, except for one guy who got shipped a duff unit.

When recording, you want to get the input level between the two little lines on the meter (that makes sense when you look at it) as far as you can. If you're going to do punch in recordings with other people playing, make sure you've practiced on your own a few times because it's a strange little process and when I try I always get flustered and mess it up.

I don't use the onboard FX so can't comment on them.

Enjoy:)

Yeah, I know but the guys who charged $599 weren't ready to give me the opportunity to pay 19% interest either,

Here's something...

When you're burning a CD, allow the machine adequate time to do it's thing... Sometimes, as it's optimizing the file for burning it can take a little time, but if you wait, it will work out just fine. The burning process is not the fastest, but the error rate is supposed to be very, very low...

I bought a VF80 almost a month ago. I love it.

The manual is really handy right after you start using it. However, once you have done one or two songs, you will have the hang of it. The EQ/Effects stuff can be a bit intimidating at first as well, but those make sense pretty quickly also.

The credit thing, I understand that...:)

Ha ha ha ha ha! MF started the old backorder thingee on me for my VF80CDR. But I showed 'em, I just canceled my order and replaced it with a VF160...:D

I'm sure heads are gonna roll down there tomorrow!

Wouldn't they make more on a more expensive item?....

Did you mean a VF160?

:)

I get this weird version of buyers remorse. I wish that I could send back what I just bought and replace it with something more expensive that doesn't exist yet...;)

Actually, for the extra $200 bucks I get a unit that could save me tons in studio fees for my quartet in the future. Since we can record 8 tracks simultaniously (8 more with another digital mixer) we can do the tracks at our lesiure and have a local guy (who is excellent and does not usually hire his services to locals) do the mastering.

All I gotta do is show my brothers the beauty of this situation and set up a temporary studio.:D
