Velvet Elvis

Ahh humma humma humma
Hey all.... got a couple of songs for you to check out.

Let me know what you think.

Blue Goodbye:

Trade:

You'll have to excuse the 96k MP3s... they are a little sloshy.

Thanks,
Velvet Elvis

I listened to Blue Goodbye. Wow! It's got radio play written all over it. It's obvious it was very well recorded. Jsut my humble opinion but it sounded like the rhythm guitars kind of dominated everything else. It sounded like the drums, bass and vocals had a hard time peaking out from under the rhythm. Minor quible though, this is really well done.

Track Rat...

Yes I agree... its actually something that happened in the mastering. The guitars are double tracked stereo, and the mastering house (a pro house) put a little too much stereo spatializer on the mix, so the center program weakened, while the stereo spread got louder. We are fixing that :)

I'm glad you like it... it actually *IS* from a recording that is going to a record company (debut album).

All tracked at my house and my mom and dad's house ;-) (they have a huge victorian house... great for various "rooms")

Trade...

Damn!! There's so much good stuff in the clinic, lately... will my hard drive fill up

The 96K isn't helping the sonics, but it's still a very cool mix... the feedback guitar as your "hook" sound is killer... the echoing vox should be louder (imhop) or you should BOOST about 3-4k very slightly, on just one of the echo tracks...

Kind of like newer U2 (the bassline) ... crossed with "Filter" ("Take a Picture")...

Excellent musicianship... Is there a way to get a clean copy of this? Maybe on a CD that you sell?

Yup!

BLUE GOODBYE-------

Good song, I dont think I should make any comments being as it is Lo FI and the fact that is is already a finished product. You guys are very talented. I would wonder If a producer would think the drums are to busy on BLUE. They are to me, but thats just my opinion. Not knocking his (or her) skills, just overplayed to much in my opinion.

TRADE-----------

Very cool song, I think this one is the hit. And it is totally "BULLET THE BLUE SKY" I think "Filter Meets U2" is a good shot. If I heard this one on the radio, I would want to call the station and find out who the band was. Did I hear some ANTARES on some parts in the song? It seemed to come through on the bridge part. Maybe not , just the 96k.

Enjoyed it despite the Lo Fi

Hey man, I'm not a "stereophile" by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the low bit rate is killing this GREAT song. "Blue Goodbye/Saw The Sun Today."

Yeah, it's a great pop song, but it's driving me nuts right now b/c the encoding is making the cymbals all splashy and phasey. Can you post some that might take a wee bit longer than 4 seconds to download?

That tom hit at 1:30 is kind of alarming. I don't know if that's what you were going for, but it made me jump both times through.

"Trade" kicks ass too. Very hooky melodies; really nice job, man. Fix that Tom hit???

Blue Goodbye

The quality of the mp3 is bad because of the low bitrate but the song is ready for the radio.

I still have "Over Myself" in my mp3 folder(another radio hit) and listen to it on a regular basis. One of the best tunes I've heard around these parts.Dont you record with the VF16?

Is the band getting any label attention yet?

Trade

Another good tune with a killer hook.I really like the guitar riff.

Wow... thanks for the comments and such.

The reason we are doing lo-fi is simply because since this is a label release project (albeit a very SMALL label), we don't want to "give" high quality versions of the songs away.

I know the mixes aren't perfect (and yes SixString, you did hear a little Antares... opps :))

The label actually hasn't heard ANY of the songs... they signed us to a single CD deal after hearing an old 3 song demo we had (sounds nothing like this).

We decided to do the recording ourselves (because we really didn't want to start $$$$$$ in the hole by paying a major studio).
I used to work at some studios around my hometown area and thought I would at least be able to make a somewhat respectable recording.

We recorded all of the drums and some guitars/bass on 3 black face adats (and you'd all laugh if you knew what mics etc were used)..

About halfway through the project, I bought an HD-24, so I used that on everything else.... GREAT unit!

I will be able to sell the CD once I get our copies back (we get some from the record company for our personal sales). It should be available in some stores and internet sights as well, but I don't have details on the distribution yet.

Maddrummer...

looks like our bands hosting company is temporarily down (they have a habit of doing this...) I will see if I can reroute the songs.

Listened to Blue Goodbye.

Great feel to it. Good guitar sound. The lead singer's voice fits well with the style. In fact all the singers (assuming there's more than one) fit well.

As you know, the rhythm guitar dominates a bit and that it's fixable. Something about the backing vocal part during the chorus (the notes held for two bars) just doesn't seem exactly right. I might have broken it up into two different notes.

But that's my only gripe. Good job.

Triple M -

Thanks for the comments... yeah the guitars should quiet down just a hair when I have the mastering house back off the spatializing just a little.

As for the vocals.. Blue Goodbye is me singing with our other guitarist doing harmony... and Trade is the other guitarist singing with me doing harmony.

Velvet

Back up!!!

ok... it looks like our provider is back online...

You should be able to get to the tunes again.

Velvet

!

I listened to some of your other songs on your site.

The only thing I would say is the vocals sound a little buried in some of the recordings, I hope you bring them out in the final mix.

You guys are good! Nice little studio you have there as well  .

Scott...

Yeah... there is one song (trip to love) that unfortunately is mixed not quite to my liking... the others the vocals are louder when you reduce the spatialization effects... so I think they will be ok.

Glad you like the tunes.

The studio, unfortunately is completely dismantled right now.

Moving to a new (literally still being constructed) house.

Hello Velvet,

I'll give you a chronological run down of comments I scribbled while listening to you catchy and very likable tune.

Lead vox up for sure. They get lost all to often.
Nice, full warm guitar sound!!

I liked the core mix of the drums, bass and rhythm gits..

Solo git only pops through on the highs. Maybe give it some more volume or eq room or both.

you've a tight and tangy pop song. Already repeating in my head.

I'd fade harder on the exit.......

MHO

peace,
theron.

Blue Goodbye is a solid song........

pump up the lead vocals........i think that would help it quite a bit.........it's a strong voice and needs to be up there........

good harmonies......nice work

Trade is a kick ass song!

Trade is a kick ass song! Can't wait to hear a clearer version! ;)

Theron -

Thanks for the comments... we will see what we can do with those changes.

The solo was actually an after thought... originally it was just drums there and some cruch chord guitars... but we thought it needed something a little extra, so I did the backwards guitar solo thing over the top.

PowderFinger -

Thanks for the comments about the singing... I'm not that confident with my vocals, so its nice to get positive feedback.

Scott -

Should I post here when and where the CD will be available? I'm not sure the record company would like me giving away full frequency versions of the songs of the CD :) But who knows!

Thanks all...
