For all of those people out there that don't yet have a computer and are thinking about buying one for the sole purpose of recording music, you may want to wait a few months and see what these two units from Mackie and Tascam have to offer. They are a dedicated hard disk digital recorder that offer 24 tracks at 24 bit fidelity at a pretty reasonable price. To my knowledge, these units have not shipped yet but if anyone has had a sneak peak and heard them I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts. You can read about them at Harmony Central http://harmony-central.com/Newp/107AES/Mackie/HDR24-96.html http://www.harmony-central.com/Newp/107AES/Tascam/MX-2424.html
and also at the Mackie and Tascam web sites.

Slap me, kick me, drag me through mud. I already have the puter and am trying to turn it into a studio as we speak. Boyo, that Tascam looks juicy... By now though, it's out of $range$. Back to plan A. Thx for the lnx though. Very instructive.

all i can say is, after seeing what the manual is like for the roland vs-880ex, i cant even imagine what it must take to figure out how to run one of those gizmos - i cant even understand all the specs.
