people just get way too offended when talking about musical tastes. You always have to make sure to say IMO after a statement about a band. People are way too uptight about this.

Maybe so in the fact that they progressed as a band to a certain point and they feel content being at that point but I don't hear a huge difference between the first and the last. Maybe about as much change as you would hear from Kill 'em All to the Black album but not enough to sound like a completely different band.
Also I'm by no means an Angel and I'm not throwing stones. It was stated that pirating is illegal and not generally accepted around here whether you do it at work or not and I stated that it was moronic to come on here and admit to it. I've done stupid things and in fact I'm smoking that "bowl" you talked about right now.

I will buy it this weekend. If it sux, well, it won't be the first time I've wasted money on music....I just hope it has some redeaming qualities. Everyone said that Godsmack's newest sux. I guess it's all a matter of opinion. And Rob Zombies latest has some good tunes, and a few great riffs. Some didn't like it either.

I've been a tool fan since Undertow. It seems that the one thing they have been incredibly consistent at is morphing their sound into something new and exciting with every album. They always stick to the "tool" key elements but take it to another level. This coupled with the typical 5-6 years in between albums seems to set a high level of expectations from fans.
Having said that....I have to admit that I just didn't get the same feeling when I turned on this new album that I did the first time I heard Anema, or Lateralus, or Undertow for that matter. I think the songs are solid and consistent with "past" tool. Unfortunately they don't seem to be as forward thinking as past efforts. There was a rumour going around the net that this album was the first in a 2 disc series. (This one being a "b-sides" compilation and Tool was just attempting to dupe the "masses" who believe anything the media/artist tells them.) The 2nd album being the "new" one. If it weren't for the consistency in production (which would be hard for a B-sides comp) I would almost buy into the hype.
Heres my beef with the new album. There are whole sections that sound like they came right out of other tracks. Vicarious sounds very similar to schism and in parts reminds me of Third Eye. I don't have the track titles memorized yet but there is another that sounds pretty damn similar to sections in "H". Now I know that Adam Jones basically uses the same 3 chords on every song so it was bound to happen at some point. I just always thought of Tool as the one band that could take simplicity and repetitiveness and morph it into an entirely new beast.
Anyhow the jury is still out for me. Sometimes it takes a few days, weeks for an album to sink in. Was it what I was expecting ? Not at all, but who knows maybe this one will grow on me yet.

I'll take the other side of the fence and say I really like this album so far. I have yet to listen to it over and over again, but what I've heard so far I really like. It's kinda like a drug to me really everytime I hear the attacking guitar rhythms and resonating tom rolls. Not to mention I think Maynard is probably one of the greatest singers ever.
I totally respect their works from a compositional standpoint....from what they add musically to what they add in the studio via effects. You really don't hear much poly-rhythmic material in a lot of rock music, especially in the popular bands. If you don't like the chords they chose for the song, listen to it for the rhythms more than anything. It's really hard to guess what Carey is going to do, and I love that.
If you're also A Perfect Circle fan, then picking up this $10 (yes, only $10) CD is a much safer buy than Maynard's last A Perfect Circle CD.

They said in an interview that touring with Meshuggah inspired them to push this a little more. Definitely some cool stuff happening in this respect.

Tool has definitely made some great music over the years but I think A Perfect Circle blows them away. With APC Maynard really let his voice soar and I think it took him in a different and better direction. Their records are just more listenable to me. Tool is great if you're in the mood though.
I'd like to hear the new one. Lateralus didn't do much for me.

The first APC is a masterpiece. The second one is listenable but lacks everything that I enjoyed about the first. The songs aren't nearly as catchy. Maybe that isn't what they wanted the 2nd time around but that was one of the main things I enjoyed about the first, It was really melodic.

Well, I 've confirmed it, the band will be over and done after touring this album. I think we will see Maynard back with APC, though I really hope they do something along the line sof their first album. Adam Jones will probably just be a freak of nature 
What I really want to see is Justin get his chance to rock his unique bass lines with a high profile group. And Danny will probably move to Brazil and live in the rainforest, if his drumming on this album is any indication.
When I was in High School, i was in a tool cover band. We would drop acid and listen to Undertow and Aenima back to back over and over. Very trippy shit. But even in sobriety, tool is less about the music, and more about expanding your thought process. Not in some hippy way, but just seeing past your perceptions and shit, i dont know, they get pretty deep.
For this last album, Jambi and The Pot are my favorite tracks so far. Everything else sounds kind of weak and rehashed, and lacks that inital edge that Undertow and the first haalf of Aenima had. Not a bad way to end a good run. Not a bad way to spend $10 either, I can't remember the last time I saw a major band realease an album that cheap.
A little off topic, but since it's being tossed about:
I used to pirate anything i could. From music progs, to tracks, to movies. Hell, I did it proudly with no shame. But between constantly formatting my drive to clear the virsuses out, faulty progs and skewed audio, and my own conscience, I stopped. I now have a very SMALL music library, Cubase LE, and a clean conscience.
That was probably more about coming out of the closet as a recovering pirate than anything else.

Well, I haven't gotten a virus in a while. Thats what you get when you DL videos and movies and applications and porn. But .mp3 I have never gotten a virus from. *knock on wood*
But if you like $10 albums, Best Buy always seems to have albums on sale the first day of their release. Something to remember.

I wouldn't say I'm a Tool fan but I have listened to them before and sort of let them just carry me along which is how I think you have to listen to this kind of music. To me, they are definitely unique. This last album has a couple of really great tunes on it, namely The Pot. The bass as clanky as it is, is freaking smokin! My hats off to the engineer. Love it!

Well Maynard claims APC is totally done and won't ever play again. And the last person I talked to on a forum that "confirmed" anything, said that the new album wouldn't have any of the songs leaked from the internet. That it wasn't going to be called 10,000 days and that all the songs and song titles were made up to throw people off. He even went so far as to say he heard it from the band directly but that he wan't allowed to say who said it.
