Hi guys,

I want to buy myself a PA system that I can use to jam with and possibly gig with. I would like to spend under $900CAD.
What are some good components to use together?

Thanks,
-Mitch

Hi Mitch,

First of all it is very important what kind of instruments you are really going to use? Moreover it is very important that you know for how many people you want to play? You have PA systems for 25, 250, 2500 and even more people?

It would be much handier if we know this at forehand than we can help you a bit further,

Greetz,

If you were basically using it to mic the vocals and maybe set up a couple mics to catch the band sound out front-this Carvin setup is in you're range. Unfortunately monitors would be extra though. I use one of these Carvin 620 mixers for club gigs with my electric and acoustic bands and it always delivers a clean and powerfully live sound-it has never failed my in 5 years or more.

Carvin P.A.

although it could be a good set, we really need to know what you are up to

At this point I do not think I need a PA for more than 200-300 people. I want to use it just for vocals, but if it has the possibility of being used for other things too, then I guess that's cool too.

The Carvin setup looks pretty interesting for what I'm looking for. I do not need a monitor right away, but if I did I guess I could buy one later on.

I'm also a little confused on how watts work on PAs. In place it says different watt specs in different places.

Also, does this PA have a compressor effect? I'm told that is something very useful for vocals.

IMHO, compression, live, ran from the stage, without a sound person, especially if just starting out, can easily make things harder to work well ( more feed back issues), and sound worse.

The guy in the PA section of my music shop downtown pointed this rig to me for ~$1200CAD: Yamaha 500w PA
What do you guys think of this?

I know the set my self and it is a good set for speaking, but I would not use it as a PA system for music. Vocals you can not do anything with. Almost the same sound as speaking in your computer microphone.
I have used it a couple of times a monitor set and that was quite acceptable but as FOH I would not use it.
Beside to tell you whta you really want you need to give a list of what you are exactly gonna use, otherwise it is very difficult to tell you what you need.

Well I want something that I can jam with, and possibly go live with.
Honestly, live isn't important right now because the type of venues we are playing have mikes and PAs.
My buddy's band has a Yorkville system in their pad. They are very happy with it. How does one of these two systems look for what I'd use it for?
