NEW TO THIS AND ALSO VS880ex

Okay, at the risk of sounding repetitious, let me put it this way:
The VS880EX is one of the coolest things mankind will ever produce. There are instances of songs done with the 880 having been used on albums and movie soundtracks. I would keep mine just for the effects alone. Want more tracks? Just sync some together with midi. I save the hard drives if there is something worth saving in that manner. They have optical outs for copying to computer. Don’t be fooled by the numbers game. These are neat little units, and can be utilized for professional results.

It’s not complicated for basic recording operations. If you’re going to copy it to a computer don’t even worry your gonads about all the complexities that are possible as you will be bypassing them with the copy process. Midi will sync ALL tracks copied. You will have to copy 2 at a time, but when you’re done EACH track will be in sync. You will notice on the back of the unit there are 2 types of digital connections. One is for optical. The optical cables won’t be susceptible to RF interference. So get yourself a soundcard with digital inputs, regular or optical. If not, you can still do an analog copy, 2 tracks at a time, and be in sync with all tracks using midi. It’s tricky to get ALL settings right, but it can be done if you’re willing to spend the time. The computer will be the master, and the VS will be the slave. When you hit “play” on your computer, the VS will play at exactly the same time in sync. When you hit “rewind” on the computer, the VS will be the devoted little slave and follow exactly because you will be using midi machine code. VSPlanet and the manuals are good resources. Just remember, “garbage in – garbage out”. I’ll try to take a picture of the notes I made for myself so’s I could remember the settings in the computer and Cakewalk (or Sonar). Cool Edit…? Hmmm, maybe you can’t sync with midi in Cool Edit. I dunno about that program I have it but always used Cake. In that case put a sharp click at the beginning or end of ALL tracks at the same time in the VS, then adjust them in your computer after they are copied as Wish14 said. Like Acidrock said, it may be an ambitious a task at your present level. It took me a looooong time to get the VS to sync with a computer. I started off with some software that cost $150 called VSPro, by Datasonics, in Australia. It let’s you see and edit the tracks on your computer as you manipulate them in the VS. Nothing like support calls to Australia to help run up the phone bill. (I live in Calif.)

Do you post on VSPlanet, Monty? Different name perhaps?

Probably about 5 years ago. Their site shut down and a lot of them started coming here. So a lot of us started going there when it re-opened.

Yeah...I remember the VSPlanet invasion...that was kind of a free for all!!!

Aaah...the good ole days!!!

I'm Wish over at the Planet....that's more of my home base then Homerec...but it's all good.

See ya.

Someone mentioned on here somewheres that the VS880EX has some bilt in pre amps ???

I cant find these in the Manual ?? is it the same as the Pre-levels

The preamps are what you are controlling with the input trim knobs. You will notice they introduce a lot of hiss turned past 9 o'clock. The EX really needs external preamps, even a mixer will do better than the on-board jobbies.

sweet. someone else just told me the exact same thing ...

Anyways i picked up the VS last night and will be tinkering with it this week. im so happy. My nipples have been hyper sensative since i got up. :)

Please have your nipples treated by a liscenced mammologist before recording, or at least put band aids over them. The tone caused by rubbing your chest against any recording device is to be avoided, but it is downright ghastly on any of the VS series. Furthermore, despite what anyone tells you to the contrary, milky secretions do not simply "sponge off" consoles. Club soda doesn't help, either.

You don't want to know why I know, I just know.

.....................right.

so here im reading and i got to thinking now ... My origina lidears were to recordonly drums first then somehow get them to my computer. just get them of the vs and stuff.

but the more i got to poking around. would it make way more sence to record 6 tracks of drums off the floor and then before proceeding with the rest of the instruments ,,... re-record those tracks with some of the effects to some of the Virtual tracks ... and do EVERYTHING on the VS. and then do one final mixdown to the Computer ?? to me that makes alot more sence right at the moment.. but am curious as to wether its posssible and the easiest. ...

and on another note .. just flipping thru the appendices i see they have quite a selection of Amp and Mic simulators. are these worth figuring out. how to use ...

whats everyones general feelings on the Mike sims?

Everyones? Damn, now I have to go and figure that stuff out. :(

hahaha. well not everyones .. just whats your thoughts on these things.

but if i meant everyone it be a good way to meet the neigbors...

atom bomb: "hey there .. whats your thoughts on the Vs880s mike simulators ?"

little old lady: "pardon?"

atom bomb: "the mike simulators ... duh. on the Roland Vs880EX"

little old lady: "but i drive a Ford sweetie ... here have a jolly rancher.."

im going o start this afternoon.... this should be fun ....

I do all my recording in the EX, and mixdown onto the computer. I just don't feel up to the hassle of sending off tracks two at a time, re-aligning them, aquiring a drive full of plug-ins, yadda.

The mic sims are no biggie, just eq's, really. One did save my bacon when I had a craptackular lead vocal take from a live show. The nice part is all the parameters are available and tweakable.

yea i saw that the guitar amp sims are tweakable and saveable as well....

but if i tweak one of those and save it as a user patch, as i see you can do that .....

if i start a new song does that user patch overwrite the original preset permanently???

A couple of thoughts....

The amp sims have three gain stages, high, medium and low.To really be able to adjust your gain, use the input/preamp knob in conjunction with the gain setting.
I always thought the multi-effects were pretty usable too.
The mic sims weren't really my thing, but there are definitely some nuggets in the VS.Things you wouldn't go out and buy on their own,but are fun.Things like the vocoder and the voice transformer.

The VS also has an auxilliary send for a hardware effects unit too.

One last thing, there are different versions of the VS800EX software. You can view the number on the screen somewhere, perhaps during the boot sequence.Well that can be upgraded via midi if you don't have the latest version, provided you can find the files that is.

I've got to agree with Monty, the VS was one cool machine.Personally I think of it as a benchmark of recording tools for it's time.

thats awesome .. haha i got to poking aroundthe manual into the deeper bits and saw the partioning bull crap. and the guy i bought it from said it had one partiton .. of 540 mins ??? not sure what MB size that is. out of curiosity i checked anyways and to my suprise there are three in there ... two at 540 mins and one at 9 mins ... not the most useful thing but an added bonus for me lol.

HAs anyone here ever had any problem recording 6 live tracks all at the same time ???

540 min sounds like 1 gig partitions, in MT1. Six at a time is no problem at all, the software and hardware were developed exclusively to run with each other for a single task. No conflicts are possible in a decently-designed all-in-one.

Ya know, I am not sure if user patches are saved globally, or within a song. I think it's within the song. There are duplicate patches, so over-writing isn't a big deal.

Edit: The 9 minute partition probably has stuff recorded on it, and you are displaying time remaining. I don't recall seeing a 3 gig HD anywhere.

JESUS.

i layed down the sound checks in preparation for the beds tonight with this bands drummer.

I literally shit my pants.

I was nervous at first casue i was worried the quality wasnt there casue we were using not the best mikes in the world. all dynamic and one omi directinal something or other on the rack and stuff.

But it was really a shock ot hear after we got our mic placements done.

MUCH better then i thought .... it would turn out. . . . .

i thank everyone for there help that have given me pointers ... i cant wait to move ahead on this unit .. and possibly progress past the 880EX

I used that vocal transformer to make an answer message for my answering machine. Makes me sound like a robot. The male to female transformer makes me sound like my mom. I get 4 partitions on mine. The 4th is small. Different size hard drives affects that I guess. It's booted up with whatever hard drive I've put into it. Never had any problems in that respect, or any other respect. I like the effects available in the unit.

You can put that transformer into "FE'" or fader edit mode
allowing you to use the VS sliders to control the effect.

You have to take what the voice transformer gives you for the male to female, but it's pretty freaky.
