new to recording

I am new to recording and haw a couple of questions I hope someone can answer for me. i just bought a use FD 4 and it works good as far as I can tell. A couple of questions; 1) do i have to buy a mic for my guitar or can I just run a line from my line out or mic out on my amp to the recorder and 2) I assume I have to have powered monitors (speakers?) to hear my playback?

hey, welcome to the board!

well first off, you could just plug the guitar right in but I would recomend mic'ing the guitar amp.

also, you can use headphones instead of monitors.
