hey guys. i need some help on choosing my mixer, mic, monitors. decent budget but im just not experienced enough to know what brands are good. i originally got in to recording for my wife cause she can sing like its noones business. now i wanna take it serious and get down to it. im not sure if i want a digital or analog mixer. it seems id be safer to go digital cause of the way technology is advancing i feel like soon everything will be digital. maybe a mixer that has a built in interface but has good mic pre amps. but if i get a mixer with a built in interface will protools pick it up?? any help would be much appreciated. and as far as mics im thinkin audio technica.?.? any comments? and monitors maybe tannoy reveal 501s they sound pretty good for the price youd pay. maybe one day ill have some genelecs... also whats the difference in the type of monitors... all help is needed even if its not about anything ive posted. and please dont talk like i know anything about recording... break it down barnie style haha im just a grunt (marine corps infantry) thanks, tyler

Read the stickies up the top and then come back and ask more questions with that knowledge as your background. Understand why, unless you have live uses for it, you don't need a mixer. Tell us about the PC we assume you'll be recording on, or as you mention "protools", that perhaps you're already recording on. Why are you saying "protools". If you have it, what version? And tell us your budget - what's "decent" mean to you? $5000? More? Less?

i felt like i was missing a couple things. im using protools 10 with a macbook pro. and $2k-$10k... i can take my time i just want quality sound. what kinda mic should i use for recording acoustic guitars? is a large diaphram condensor mic the best for vocals?

On mics, there is no "best". There is some conventional wisdom but that's only for reference. Are you ever going to be recording a full band? Just the wife singing to backing tracks that you build one or two tracks at a time? Yeah, read the stickys. It's help you ask questions that you're not aware of yet. Knowledge is power.

dont get bogged down in gear. You are already thinking in the wrong mindframe
