new to recording and need serios guidance.

sorry to say but i am new to this whole recording on the home pc idea but am really ingterested. i have a really nice computer that i built myself but set it up for gaming. me and some friends are starting a band and i want to record the live practice sessions so we can listen to it and tweek! i have an nvidea fx 5700 sound card but am not sure which port is mic and which is line in. i also would like some advice on what equipment i need to make it sound good. please help me if you can.

Wow ummm welcome.

Are you going to be recording multiple tracks at once? What kind of money are you looking to spend? Your sound card is by no means made for recording audio.
