Hello,
I'm new to your forum, but wondered if anyone could offer some advice on my first attempts at using Midi. I've been making home recordings for a number of years, using Cakewalk Guitar Tracks 2, and have always just plugged mikes/guitars/keyboards/effects-units etc directly into the soundcard. However, I've just bought a Midi keyboard as something new to try, but so far have been unable to get it to make a single sound! I should have probably researched this a bit more earlier...

The Keyboard is a Akai MPK Mini. It was advertised as coming with "software" but no details on this were listed. The software itself turns out to be a program called 'MPK MINI Editor', which appears to consist simply of a panel representing the presets applied to the various pads and knobs on the keyboard itself, with an option to load in presets. As far as I can tell I've connected the keyboard correctly via USB (it's powering it and the pads light up when pressed), I've selected the correct item when opening the program ("USB Audio Interface") and correctly loaded the first pre-set, but I still get no sound from touching the keys.

The only instructions which came with it are a "Quickstart" guide with 4 pages summarising what the buttons represent (on both keyboard and software) but it still doesn't really explain how I get actual sound.

Am I foolishly missing something vital - such as a corresponding program to run it with? Some different Audio Settings I need to adjust in Windows (I'm running XP)? Any suggestions very gratefully received.

Many Thanks.

You need a VSTi virtual instrument and a VSTi host. Most DAW programs are VSTi hosts, so the instrument could be a plug-in in your DAW. A searchable database of free and commercial plug-ins and hosts can be found here.
