New to analog!! Help

Ok I talked to the seller. This is what he said.



"Thanks for the message and the for the link. Sadly, I don't have the means of packing items like that with shrink wrap and such but what I do use is 1" styrofoam boards in layers (better than how they were shipped from the factory). These cost about $15.00 a board but its well worth the investment. I use bubble wrap or another form of protection for the face and them more styrofoam boards on top. The boards are expensive but they handle the worst shipping accidents. I've shipped these all over the world and never had a problem with shipping damage. I also only use Fedex for shipping these decks."
 
I shipped a MSR-16 myself using the shipping thread. Got a 27" TV box from Uhaul (about $10) then some bubble wrap and some styrofoam insulation from Home Depot. Cut the insulation to fit the sides of hte box, wrappede the deck in bubble wrap, also cutting a few pieces of stryrofoam as a wedge to make it level with the reel tables and head block. bubble wrap around the controls. Then peanuts galore to fill the extra space in the box. It wound up costing about $30-40 in materials to package, but the deck traveled fine. I've had two machines damaged in shipping, one some idiot just put one thin layer of bubble wrap around the machine... It may seem like overkill but I've been happy to get machines in big huge boxes that work coming out of them...

BTW, my second ever board (first was a JVC 6x2 with built in spring reverb!!!!) was a Teac 5. Still have one, good for 4 track, in fact designed for it, with four tape returns. Used it for 8 track, somewhat limited. Some of the later Tascam 8x4 boards have more routing options, but I've been happy with the Teac 5, has a very intuitive layout.

I'd concur on the 22-4 also, if you are OK with 7" reels, it is a nice machine. I believe it was designed for thinner tape, but you can get LPR-35 new which is 1 mil tape, 457 NOS is available too from Quantegy-online.
 
Take the advice of the guys about shipping. The packing thread is scary. 1Question I didn't is, is 4 tracks going to be enough? I was just wondering.
 
Well for the first song im gonna use an acoustic upright piano (2 mics)
drums (2 mics) acoustic guitar (2 mics) and a mellotron (one mic).
And vocals.
Hopefully I could put at least 4 mics on one track..

Also, where is a good place to buy recording tape?

As far as I'm aware, one of these two are going to be your best bet. I've had great service from both places.

Mmmmk. I'm going to assume Del Rio or Harlingen area then. The most active cities for gear are usually San Antonio and Austin. Keep tabs on those CL listings. Every now and then something pops up in Dallas/Fort Worth. Houston is almost a black hole.;)

After using the search bar and finding all kinds of threads on where to buy tape, I've decided not to re post old posts.

Heck, maybe you'll strike it gold with that eBay seller / auction you noted but I wouldn't take the risk, if I were you. Do you gamble?

I bought my A-3340S about a year ago from a seller on ebay and he did a super job of packing. One of the exceptions I suppose. And, it has been a great deck. No probs whatsoever. From what I've heard I am very lucky to have a good deck. :)
