Hi all, I have been home recording for about 8 months now, using a free version of goldwave, and a five dollar radio shack microphone. I am finally getting the chance to upgrade my studio. I dont really have a cost budget, but I dont wanna be spending much more than $2000, if I can spend less and get a good quality studio that would be even better. I would like to keep my system as much digital as possible and avoid analog. First I should say the type of music I make is rap/hip-hop, so I dont need to be recording any instruments. I basically want a really nice vocal setup, and something to make beats on. Do I need an external 4,8,16,24 track recorder, or can I plug the mic almost directly into my computer ? Should I get cakewalk or cubase ? What microphone is better than a shure-58 for vocals, but not way more expensive ? what sort of beat programs are out there ? not a looping program though. I will probably have come up with some more questins by the time I get a response. I just would like someone out there to point me in the right direction and tell me exactly what I should get.

i do hip hop/rap too.no you dont really a external recorder unless you dont wanna use your cpu. its cheaper to use it though. if your gonna use the cpu you need to get a mixer, not a DJ mixer. for beats you can use a drum machine-the best is the Zoom Rthym Trak 234- or progams, the best is Fruity Loops Pro with you can download at www.fruityloops.com you can hook up the mixer in the LINE IN in your cpu and record whatever you want.then you can put all your tracks together with progs like n track and cakewalk. i use Multiquence because its practically free and you can use as many tracks as you want.
if you want to use a external recorder you should get a a tascam 424 MKIII. its practically the best out there except for digitals. those can get pretty expensives. dont get a DAT machines cuz thats a waste of money.
as far as the microphones, the SM58 is your best bet but if you wanna shell out more $$$ jus for a recording micrphone, the best bet ive seen is the Shure SM94-LC.
hope this helps you

I prefer to use external analog equipment and then converting it to digital format but this is difficult to do on a 2000.00 budget.Good quality costs. Theres no way around it.
You may want to stick with the theory in the previous post until your funds open up. But as far as vocals, I would invest in a nice Mike and pre-amp. Dont skimp if you can avoid it. SM-7,RE-20,a CAD mic, or maybe some kind of tube Mic.These mics are expensive but in your application, vocals are the primary focus, and should be recorded at best.In my opinion, since vocals are the only thing your going to mic,I would go all the way and get the good stuff.

Yo Vision, more than likely you have a computer, so I would recommend using it dont skimp on the mic for I have found with some of the posts ive posted the advice i got was get a descent mic, and I didnt listen and am now suffering, you can make just about any type of beat with your computer that u could with an external drum machine I have a roland groovebox and a boss dr groove wich i hardly ever use, now that i have my cpu hooked up. there are so many programs that are available.basically its a preference thing but I could have saved at least 2 grand had I went with my computer in the first place.
