hello everyone,

I'm putting together my home studio in a new construction that will be underway within a couple of weeks. I'm now in the process of aquiring the equipment I need/want. Below I've listed my wish list. I'm looking for possible direction from the members of this forum.... Am I heading in the right direction or is this list just not right.

-24~32 channel analog board ( soundtracs/amr/soundcraft/hill audio..) (budget = $2,000.00)
-motu 24i/0 (budget = $1,000.00)
-motu 2408 mrkII (already have)
-pentium pc (already have)
-cubase (already have)
-other toys (up to $4,000)

anyway this will be the overall system. I planning on acquiring some mic pre's, compressors, mics and other goodies along the way. )As you can see I will most likely end up with a bunch of previously used gear but that's ok.)

As for recording, I'm thinking I will use the mic pre's from the analog mixer and record on to the pc throught the motu interface. For mixing I was thinking of sending the tracks back through the board again and using the eq's of the analog board as opposed to using the pc's eq's. Most likely the board I end up with will not have any automation on it so I will have to mix levels with the pc through Cubase. As for fx, I was planning on using some outboard gear as well as the effects that I have available through Cubase.

Does this make any sense? I'm looking to record a variety of styles of music and want to be as versitile as possible with my studio. And of course I'm wanting the best sound that I can get.

Any suggestions re: boards, pre's, pc.... are much appreciated. Since I'm still in the beginning stage, I'd like to get as good a system that I can for about $7500. (my budget)
 
You seem to be heading in the right direction. Everything is compatible and more than enough for the beginning home studio. There's also pletny of room for expansion in the future. I'd focus more on good mic's and a couple solo pre's for vocals. Ofcourse the other things you've listed are very important as well (good outboard compressor).

Also, be sure to take lots of pictures of the construction process. :)

Thanks for your reply. The physical charactarists of the studio will be fairly basic. What I've settle for right now is a control room, tracking room and vocal booth maybe two vocal booths and an equipment closet. Like I mentioned in my first post, the house is under construction so I can be pretty flexible as to size, and shape since my slate is perfectly clean right now. As for hieght, I should end up with about 8'6" finished.

As for the equipment, I was thinking that I would input to the board and then direct out to the motu's input. Is this not right or does this introduce to much noise in the signal path? The main purpose of this was to clean up the signal for what I couldn't do with mic placement. Maybe I'm thinking a little screwy here .... (please advise)

My pc is a pentium 3.0 clone with 1 gig of memory, 2 hd's @ 7200rpm and a video card with to outs for monitors.

I would check out the Midas Venice series mixers. Even used it would be above your $2,000 dollar budget but in the long run I think you would be happier with it. I think that your money would be better spent on a mixer of this quality than on other "toys" as the mixer is going to be the most important piece in your studio next to your A/D/A equipment. The pre-amps and EQ are supposed to be great on this board, although I have never used it personally. A couple steps down would probably be an Allen & Heath GL2200 24 or 32 track used. Save some of your budget for quality cables to run from the mics to the mixer, from the mixer to the Motu and from the Motu back to the mixer. Good luck!
 
Ok, thanks for your input so far. Here goes my first question. What do you folks think about a Peavy AMR mixer. I might be able to get my hands on one of these big boys for a reasonalbe price. I will have the room in my studio and I was just wondering what people thought of the quality of the pre's and the eq's.

This would be my first add to the studio.

Does anybody have any help they might be able to offer on the the last post. (regarding peavy-amr mixer) Is this thing any good or am I waisting my time even thinking about this board. (I know... I know... When I think I weaken the nation....yuk yuk yuk!)
 
I would not recommend a Peavey mixer for a recording setup. Maybe for a live or rehersal space. I have used a couple and they are not even close to studio quality.
