Try as i might, i cannot seem to get my new soundcard to play midi files. The audio is all fine, but nothing's heard when i try to play midi files. I know these files play - i played them through my SB card yesterday. I know there are a million variables, and i've tried to isolate all i can think of, but no avail. Here's what i have:

M-Audio 2496
Sonar 4 PE
Windows XP professional
Yamaha QY 300 Sequencer (not attached to computer at present, but would like it to be eventually)
Yamaha dgx 203 (usb) keyboard

I've tweeked the sound card's control panel every way from Sunday it seems, have loaded the inputs and outputs in Sonar for each track, custom cleaned my computer for Windows XP according to general recipes found on the web for XP music computers. If i make the dgx my OUTPUTs i can hear the tracks, but that's stupid! I have audio tracks on the same tune that will play through my monitors . . . i'd like everything to resonate through this soundcard. Any ideas would be most welcome!

I am having the exact same problem... i have the RME Fireface 800

All audio works fine ...but when i try to listen to midi tracks ..it plays but i can't hear anything.

As I also replied to Lurgan's other post:

Unlike gamer cards, high-end sound interfaces do not come with a MIDI synth built-in.

The manufacturers assume that you will not want some cheesy rom midi sounds and you will use a quality hardware or software midi synth.

By selecting the RME out in Sonar it sends the data to the out port. You'll either have to hook up a hardware synth or point the out at a software synth.

Sonar has a General MIDI module and a sampler. Or you can download rgcaudio.com free "SFZ" soundfont player and load up a big general MIDI soundfont from hammersound.net (I use Unison or Cadenza...)

Thanks Tim . . . i saw your other post after i put this one up; a big old light bulb came on. Very greatful for your help. I guess my next few questions will be in the Cakewalk forum! :o
