New Song, mic test

I got a new mic and was testing it, and it ended up turning into this song. All recorded in SonarXL. I used 24 tracks for this song, with lots of plugins (comps,verbs, delays), and recording at 24/48, I think thats about max I can go with my current PC. The mic was used on the acoustic guitar tracks, and for kicks I used it on the vocal tracks, too. Take a guess what it was, and I'll tell you after some guesses have been made. :)

Sounds good to me! The only thing that I would change is the stereo delay on the vocal, get rid of it or turn it down. The vocal is great, and the delay seems to take attention away from the vocal. Great tune!

I'm not listening on the greatest speakers, but the vocal seems to need more presence, like punch it up a bit around 8k. Good guitar sound, nice drums. I like it!
 
Man, I really like that mix. It sounded smooth and pretty clear. I have no guess on the mic, but my only advice is you work on the acoustic eq a bit, and draw down the highs a little. Great song, great mix.

A few notes. The acoustic is flat, except for a bass rolloff. I needed that for the mic test itself, I wanted to hear the characteristics of the mic on acoustic guitar.

So you dont like the delay, eh? I was trying to get a Toad The Wet Sprocket kind of vocal, just trying a few things out. In that regard, I think I came fairly close...especially considering the mic I used! :)

Just listened to your song-very nice recording! Very clean-I can hear all the instruments and the balance is good.-the only critique I can think of would be to turn up the guitar solo a bit-it seemed a little buried...Other than that-everything else sounds good to me-your hi-hats and cymbals sound real good considering its an mp3-mine seem to break up when I convert to mp3........Keep up the good work! Strat
 
Really nice song.

To make it even better, I'd echo the advice in a couple of other posts... Lose the delay on the vocals and EQ it to boost some of the highs. The delay was a bit distracting and washed out some of the words.

The acoustic could have some of the highs cut just a bit.

A really good listen.
 
very nice. Thats a c1 mic.

The mix sounds quite good except that its a bit two dimensional. I dont know if you hear that.

Not a C1.....it's a Behringer ECM8000. I kid you not. I bought it for $25 new at MARS on closeout. I was blown away at how nice it was. Thanks for the kick comment, I really worked on it. All the JV1010 again, by the way.

Sounds good.....actually sounds great.....sounds like you put a lot of work into it!

Just out of curiousity, how'd you mic up the acoustic and vocals? Were you right up on it?

I have two of these mics and I find them quite surprising.

I used the mics VERY close, thats really the way to use an omni on acoustic, IMO...unless you're going for a "room sound". For vox, I used it close with a pop filter.

Hmm, I don't know who Travis is, but the song seemed Oasis-y to me, so if he's like Oasis thats probably my feeling too.

nice song, Mr hard hearing...

The delay I think would be ok if you bring it waaaaay down..so you don't really hear it, as it will add to the fullness of the vocals, without sounding like an effect. The ac gtr sounded good to me, as well as the snare sound too. The vocals could be a little crispy-er to me. Try singing in the bathroom...or some nice reverberant room with your omni mic. You might get some really nice "killer studio" room sounds if done well.
 
good tune in its catagory. As fine as the bass sound is, I'd take even more of a Ric-o-sound..and a little chorus on the bass too...but not much. I guess I'm not liking the sound when the bass plays an open string on the second chord (and E?, I believe). Vocals need some crispyness, as with the other tune. So...are the girls going to sing the vocals...and if so...where are they??!!?? I think they'd take the tune up a couple of notches if they're fairly decent...and maybe keep your male vocals in the background during the chorus's..if they work....and especially during the "hey, hey", hey" panned part.

First thing I really noticed was the clean sound and mix of the acoustic guitar. Sounds really good!

But as with all my comments on your tunes, I still wish you would not be so self-concious as to bury your voice in to the mix, as well as over-processing it. It's a good voice, don't bury it!
It takes away from hearing the lyrics.

This is a good tune... a great clean acoustic sound. The drums are well-balanced, and I like the kick. Nice backing vocals.

Everyone has commmented on the vocal delay, so I don't want to beat a dead horse....but, at 1:58, when the acoustic guitar drops out, the delay actually sounds kinda cool. Maybe you can use a heavy delay at that point, but cut it back through the rest of the song.

Good job!
 
Sorry for the delay, my internet has been out for a couple days.

On the punk-ey song, there will be NO male vocals on it, I just did a vocal track for refrence. I love a rickk bass sound, I just need that 4003 to get it! :) The other song is being remixed by me a bit, but seeing as how I don't even know if it will be recorded, I wait to hear from the producers.

wow, I really like the Ecm 8000 on that acoustic. its perfect for this track. everybody else covered any other things i'd say. oh, i like the drum sound, too--it makes a nice pocket for the tune to sit in.
