Sorry nave, bad joke. Read back, the answer to that question blew me away. It was more than 2. ;)

Holy smokes bat man.........I couldn't even do that if I wanted to ...definately cause a CPU overload......Anyhow...thats amazing.......

BTW I love the pixies...but I'm not sure that this sounds like them.....other than the fact that sometimes the pixies sort of fit inbetween grunge and glam....so I guess there is a similarity there.......I personally really like the pixies album Trompe le monde which leans more toward the grunge sound.....not that you care..:D It's also probably there worst production effort..

BTW...I have to keep typing here cause I'm still shocked at the 75 layer deal....Holy shit....That's how they do that......I finally figured it out(well at least you did) thanx vox.........

BTW...Vox ...Why 75? you figured somewhere in the fifties and sixties you would be like: "thats enough already"..... Does this have anything to do with your Obssesive Compulsive disorder :D

Nave...

Thanks.... Can't wait till you guys here the good mix... thats just the rough slap up job...

75 Layers in the Chorus Nave...

I counted all the tracks tonight and heres what I did..

25 seperately sang layers, on the High harmony...
I bussed them together and duplicated the track to have 25 on each panned side

Then I put in 25 more layers of the lower harmony right down the middle..

I guess that makes 75 layers.. but really only 50 were seperately sang....

thanks for listening..

PS.. Im glad you don't think it sounds like the pixies... the person who said that had me a bit worried that I was guilty of unintentional plagerism *LOL*

AMAZING!!!!!!!! I learned something new today...utterly amazing................How did you figure out that you needed that many layers to come up with that sound? Did you learn that tip somewhere? was it just a trial and error thing? Do alot of records actually use that many layers? (im asking alot of questions) do you know the answers to any of these questions? How far is the moon away from the earth? what is the capital of Zaire?

Seriously though I'm very curious....

I just kept going till it sounded good....

Just think, Def Leppard uses 130 in the song "Love Bites"

I work very fast.... I have about 3 hours tracking in that song.. tops....

I think my sound has alot to do with my OCD....Im glad you mentioned that..

Alot of people just record and have a good time and get alot out of it... With me, It's purely challenge...

I get a sound in my head and Im like "I Can do that"..... and if I "can't" I have to keep trying till I "can"

Just like with the Def Leppard Sound.. I have always wanted to do that, and this is the first time I really applied it....

I did a bit of research, and read some articles in old Recording mags etc, and found out Mutt Lange's Method of doing those Lepard Vocals...

Then I applied it in my studio, and It's actually pretty damn close... Im still shocked by this chorus...

Nothing is Far fetched anymore in my opinion...All Im using is $799 Digi 001, nothing fancy.....

I always listened to famous albums in awe, thinking of the equipmet they must be using..Now we have the means to do it at home, and fairly cheap...

It's all about setting goals and obbsesively trying to achieve them...(with me, at least)

hey, hey!!!! I can answer that!!!!! (as he eagerly waves his hand from the back of the classroom)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

damn vox...you beat me to the punch, and my post was supposed to come next. I guess you get called on last sittin' in the back row with the retards...:(

ya know...I gotta go try that on a song now...

Well, yeah In the 80's Rock chorus's regularily had many many vocals....

If your familiar with def leppard... you will notice a really "airy" sound over the BV's....

That can't be achieve by adding a bunch of High Eq....On 4-6 vocals...... What that sound is, is the air coming out of the persons mouth and going into the Mic... and then times that by 75....

Thats the "Angelic" airy sound you mentioned..

You can't get get close to this effect with under 20..... You need that layer upon layer..

When I say layer, I mean singing the exact same thing over and over and over and over and over...
Then when you've done it 50 times.. start with the next harmony..

Just for the sake of experiment.. Sometime in the near future, Im gonna do 500 and see how it goes...

Im recording 24 bit digital, so there shouldn 't be much degredation in all the bussing and bouncing I will have to do...

Geez....

I've created a monster...*LOL*

Now every song in the clinic is gonna have those Backing vocals... I should have just held on to the secret.... (well, Mutt lange's secret that is)

Go at it Mix.. do 'em up.....:D

I got more advice coming in a few..... Im pumping these posts out as fast as I can type:D

Don't be obbsesed with perfection....

When doing these style of vocals... You don't have to get them perfect...

I mean, get them damn close... But they will all counter correct each other...

The first ten will sound a bit thin and wavy... Once you get to 30-30, you will start hearing the smooth airy sound...

Sing one perfect one first, and then double all your next vocals based on that....

What im trying to say is... Even though your layering 75 times... You are only singing along to the first one.. all the rest are muted...

It would be just a mess, and you wouldn't know which one was "you" in the present tense if you could hear them all when singing..

The Pioneers of this effect were the Beach boys.... and Freddy Mercury resurected it with "Bohemian Rhapsody"... that sound had 100 layers...

Then after all those years, Mutt Lange took it and finally made it sound good :D

By the way, a very little known fact is that Mutt Lange did alot of those harmonies for Def Leppard.. he is an amazing singer...

If you wanna hear the leps.. check out "Lets get rocked"... thats mostly them... But the older Stuff... "Animal", Love Bites" and "Pour Some Sugar on me" was all mostly Mutt singing the BV's

Now he does it on everything he produces..... Micheal Bolton has these Def Leppard Vocals.. Bryan Adams... even the Britney Spears Song that Mutt did, has Def Leppard style backings...

Amazing huh....?

Ok, my fingers are tired... anymore questions, I'll get back to ya's tommorow. :D

That was great vox.....Seriously man ...thanx for that....I'm glad to see someone who is so enthusiastic about sharing their ideas....mo power to ya my brotha........It sounded very good....and I like your "nothing is out of the reach of the homerecorder" type attitude......Now I just need to adopt that attitude myself :)

cool sound man!

I liked it when it switched from the crappy voice to the pro one. I also agree thats its radio ready.

That 75 sang voices sounds wierd, Kinda like a choir of only one person. It also sounds a little bit thin. I dont know if this is a result of so many voices creating a flage or something.

Anyhow, it sounded nic. Nice confidence and energy about it.

It doesnt sound like 75 layers. You could have done it in less time with 4 or so MAX and still got the same result.

I agree - I was listening to it thinking man...for 75 layers it sure sounds like something I would have guessed 2-3 even.

Kick ass! Great tune and mix. Both of them.
