New Song As I promised

Here is a song I mixed for my wifes latest project. I can post this one cuz it aint going to radio (I think :) ) It is already copyrighted so thieves beware!!!!. :)

Everything is live except the record scratch which came off an old Roland DC-1 module.

If you visit my site you will see what mics i used to track the project.

The gtrs were all direct through ART Tube MP Mic pre's

Vocals were cut with an old CAD Equitech E200 mic and a Behringer MIC2200 2 Channel Tube Mic Pre.



Everything was 48k/24 bit

Mixed in DP4 with UAD/Waves/DUY/Wave Arts/Sonalksis plugins.

Nice pop song. I like it. Singing sound like michael jackson at points.
Could see J Lo singing this song.

I'm listening to headphones at work so it's hard to tell, but I can't really hear any bass ?

Congrats on the contest, I havent had a chance to listen to this yet but I will as soon as I get home and have a sec to chill. I just recently moved from the "D" to cincinnati, so its nice to know a fellow Detroiter won the little mix comp. I come up often and wouldnt mind droppin by your studio sometime and check you out. I saw you was using some DUY stuff, so I downloaded the demo last night but havent had a chance to apply it to anything. I'm a waves fan but the DUY looks pretty good. Do you use the vintage warmer on much stuff? The vintage warmer is quickly becoming my favorite plug.

Since I relocated business has been pretty good so far but I'm not advertising its just been thru word of mouth. Not quite ready to advertise since I dont have all the preamps and mics I really need to do it right but should be there shortly. For the moment I have been doing more mixing then recording so it all works out. I'm like you, I try my hand at all genres of music. Makes no sense to limit yourself to a certain type of music doesnt make money sense.

If you got time you can check out 3 different recordings and mixes I have done to promote different genres to show the diversity in my skills.

Glad you liked the bottom on that track. Gotta hold it down. LOL

I use the vintage warmer from time to time. it has a nice subtle warming effect. Sorta smootsh the transients out a bit.

it seems the low end is really too strong and I am hearing a fair amount of clipping....like the mix was really pushed slightly over the limit. Those items corrected, this sounds very nice.
 
I pushed it up a bit with Finalplug as the level was at -18dbfs. Now the clipping you are hearing... Could you tell me where? and so far as the bottom. Nah. it's right where it is supposed to be. I like my bass powerful. I cant stand songs with light bass. Let the mastering engineer fix it if he deems so. LOL. He will get his chance in about 1 week. I have 1 more song to mix for her album :) I like my bass heavy like R. Kelly :)

Of course maybe I should let you hear the unlimited version to get a more subjective reference. :)

Lastly, are you sure the clipping you think you might be hearing is not the record scratch that I have playing all the way through the song??????
 
I am assuming "finalplug" is something like the L1 maximizer or something of the sort? The clipping I am hearing is thruout the entire mix, analogous to a pair of speakers being pushed too hard. ....or too much "squishing" of the mix. It occured at all levels I listened to. Not a lot, but along the lines of someone abusing and using a plugin like T-Racks or something of that sort.

As far as the bass, a hefty amount is certainly your choice. I mentioned it, because in comparision to most other "balanced" mixes I have heard, the bass seems to overpower in comparison. Most noted played side by side with other mixes. I believe a strong bass can be achieved without having it being so dominant either thru solid compression to make it also punchy, or spaces within the performance to keep the "bottom rumble" to a minimum.

I hear the M. Jackson reference too, btw!

oh ...yeah... the record scratching is pretty obvious, and is not the clipping that I hear.

I do like the tune and the sounds of the instruments. Very nice.
 
I am gonna listen to that mix as all I did was squish it so that I was limiting to about 2.5 db just for volumes sake. (which is actually quite a bit, when I do a real mastering job I let no comp or limiter go beyond 1.0 db of gain redux.)

Ok as I have finally listend to the limited version of this mix I have to concur, it is a little squashed. But sorry I cant agree with you on the bass. As I stated I hate light in the booty mixes. If they want less bass for the final let em master it away. Dont bug me. LOL. That is the joy of mixing your own stuff you dictate the flavor.

Lastly I need a good description of the clipping as i have listened to the limited version and the unlimited version and dont hear what you hear, UNLESS it is something that happened in the conversion from aiff to an mp3 (I am listening to the originals of course)
 
btw..visited your website. Appears like you have a nice setup. I didn't see your moniter setup in your equipment list. What do you monitor over? Maybe that's the difference ....(not mentioning my media player!!!) I have some dinosaur speakers I listen with... JBL4311, Urei time aligns and some cute Auratones... and of course my Sony 7506 headphones. They hype the bass pretty good themselves, but actually sound pretty close to my monitors overall for headphones that is. Or..maybe it's the cheap beer!!

One last thing. I took the liberty to listen to your mixes page. Which tells me everything. We have 2 different mix ears. Your perspective on bass is much different than mine and the circle I move in.

I had to learn that when mixing live for white corporate crowds. light in the booty but when mixing for a black audience if the bass is light you get cussed out. I am black of course. :) and WE LOVE BASS!!!!! The heaviest bass you have is the gensis mix. Form what I have listened to thus far.

just to "keep it real"

When I see a black band mixed by a white guy it is rare to find him placing the bass JUST RIGHT he usually has the drums bumping but no bottom. We live and die by Bottom. it is our calling card. :)

Just my upbringing and roots. :)

oh yeah, and if you are black.... Sorry. :)

Wowo i thought that was on there. I use a pair of soffit mounted mackies. they sound like the Genelecs with more bottom :) I also have some awfultones. LOL

And realize I was not trying to be offensive with my black white comment just what I have observed traveling over the past 8 years.

white enginners generally have very clean mixes and us brothers mix heavy and tight. Just based on what we listen to. :) and I love rock, pop, folk, country, etc... but I always felt it was light in the bottom so i would boost the bass on my rig to "feel it"
 
Oh yeah. LOL I hate the 7506 headphones. TOO BRIGHT. LOL I Love the V6's though. Nice and warm. Nice round strong bottom. LOL

And so goes it on and on. For a minute you had me worried. i played the song like 9 times, lights off, eyes closed. and was like it's right. LOL. even woke my wife up to come down and listen to the mix again and she was like it's right. LOL. Whew!!!. LOL But seriously I take all criticism seriously. even if I disagree i will still check it out. and I never get offended. :) I want to have grammy's on the wall and some platinum :) I gotta stay humble. LOL. and confident :)

most certainly...no offense taken. I did have the opportunity to be a white engineer in an all black studio back in the early 80's in St. Louis. They had a MCI board and 24 track and was located on a 2nd floor. What a bitch for eveyone to carry their equipment upstairs. The owner seemed to like how I was engineering/mixing, and actually was quite a supprise to me. I didn't really do any "heavy duty" projects there, but I certainly had a lot of fun.
Most of the stuff seemed to be "groove" kinda music with the minimoog weaving in and out. I think the upstairs location killed the studio though. (or maybe it was this white boy engineer!!)

Black music in the 80's was light, but when the 90's came about and more of us actually worked the gear it got more and more bottom ended. :) Then came the white mastering engineer. LOL so we mixed even heaveir to make that multiband comp/limier work. LOL, If I mix light my clients question me like did you get some sleep this week. LOL

I recall a project in 92 my church did. After it was mastered we all complained about he missing bass. LOL
 
But it's cool cuz We learn form each other. I learn when i am mixing for a white audience more drums, less bas and so on. the only issue I will have is this rock track my wife did. I will have to slap my hand to not drive that bass. :)

prolly mix it heavy and then come back the next day and pull the bass back 3db and then the mix will be right. :)

helps to know your weaknesses.

Giles, that's a really nice song.... your wife has a beautiful voice, the lyrics are great, the sounds/mix (bass too) is fantastic.

I didn't think it was bass heavy at all. (and I'm a non-dancing white middle management software geek now!!!!! That's as bad as it gets!!! :D :D )

You've also consistently driven home the point that it's not the equipment... it's the talent!!!

Thanks man. And my Lead gtr player is a Rock head. But I yanked him because I needed that style and personality in the track.

My wife has some straight ahead rock tracks coming out on the next project. We have been in the Lab working on melodies and foundations. Will be a lot of hip hop influence under this stuff with a heavy rock drive as well. We have figured out how to get our love for jazz sneaking up in these tracks too. LOL So it will be total fun.

Yes, Talent/Skill/Ability is #1

I remember in my early studio days this one kid would make some slamming tracks with an old Ensoniq TS-10 and other guys had all the gear and couldnt make anything decent to listen too.

#2 is Gear.

Anybody can push a fader or twist a nob, but listening, practice and study (ALL THE TIME) will give you the why.
