I like the backing vocal at :59 - and I'm getting a nice Lou Reed vibe off the whole thing. It's not as smooth, but the vibe is there. I'd bump the BPM up 1 or 2 and see how it feels.

That's super cool to hear as Lou Reed and Jonathan Richman are probably my top two all time favorites. I kinda lump them in as the same really. Lol. What did you think of the song and specifically the bass line? I was trying for an old school Motown type feel there.

I enjoyed this. I'm getting Mazzy star vibes more than anything.

I initially agreed with Odi that picking up the pace wouldn't hurt but now I'm wondering if just hearing a hihat or shaker at shorter intervals might do the trick.
Listen to Mazzy Star - Sweet Jane to see what I mean. (y)

Thanks, Steen. We're huge Mazzy fans and actually working on a cover of theirs.
There is a shaker in there on the same track as the finger snaps, but maybe I need to bring those up or move them to individual tracks to adjust them.

It looks like Cowboy Junkies covered Sweet Jane, not Mazzy. Is that right? We like Mazzy but not really influenced by Cowboy Junkies. But that cover is cool! The vocal was inspired by this NYC band called the Walkmen who we really like. The guy always strains and it sounds kinda cool. Check out "Thinking of a dream I Had" pretty awesome song of theirs. It's much harder than this song, but you can hear the strained delivery.

Oh, nice! What song, if you're not keeping it secret.

Yeah, maybe it'd help. You can almost create the illusion of increasing the pace by having that '1 and 2 and...' pulse to follow.

Mazzy definitely did it.

Edit : My mistake - You're absolutely right.

We worked on both Look on Down from the Bridge and Flowers in December! We lost our violin player, so we might not do Flowers and might just stick to the Bridge. Such a great band.

Interesting I'm not finding it on YouTube.

I like the song. I hear the influence in the bass - it needs more movement - variation. Upping the song tempo a little would help some, but the bass needs to move up to it. @Steenamaroo's Sweet Jane song reference is a nice example (I'm thinking of the Cowboy Junkies' slow version) - I would also add The Temptations' Just My Imagination. Nice movement on the bass in a slow song.

This is the Walkmen song I was talking about:

I especially think the 3:00 mark onward when the song breaks into a totally major sound with color chords is especially beautiful with the strained vocal.

I really like how the vocalists uses strain to push the limits and give the vocal energy. I know I'm not as good as this guy, which is why I'm here and not in NYC playing the Bowery Ballroom (lol) but I can still try to give that vibe. When I sing it in my normal baritone the pitch gets better but it loses all energy...we have a female singer who is really good. I gave it to her to sing, and it also lost energy being in her range. So it was almost like it needed the strain. I'll have to redo it, agree. It was just 1 take to give something to the band as a demo.

Thanks for the very specific feedback. I'll give it to my bass player and tell him he can be liberal with changing it up. I played bass on this, and I'm not our bass player, so in my head I was just "doing something motown" and vibey that I liked and didn't want to change it since I was enjoying it. Lol. We'll see what he comes up with at rehearsal tonight.

My mistake, you're quite right. Sorry about that.

Great band, indeed.
I'm sorry to hear that, about your violinist.
I recorded Look on Down twenty something years ago after hearing it in the first season of Sopranos. Can't believe it's that long ago.

You should share it on youtube or something where we can listen to it. I love covers...!

I hear what you mean!
I think a lot of that is in the recording too. Sounds like distressors as far as the eye can see or some kind of distortion,
but no doubt that's a singer who's 100% going for it too.

I uploaded a pitch corrected version to the original post (I'll redo the vocals soon) and cleaned up some mud. Does that sound better?

I Love the laid back groove you got here. I really liked the lyrics and the way that they were presented.
There were a few spots where I thought some harmony might work nicely , but it sounds very intimate as is.
Enjoyed it .. mark

Very kind thanks, mark. Where would you like more harmonies?
