Hey guys. Need some advice on a new snare. What do you guys recommend in the less than $400 range? Needs to be able to crack like a hittin a board. What does DW have in this range? What about Pearl Signature? Thanks in advance.

Sounds good! ;)

But on the other hand, *DON'T* listen to me.... I'm not a drummer!!! :p

Well, what kind of snare sound do you like?
If you like a really tight snare-go for a 5". I personally can't stand piccolo's, so I wouldn't suggest one-but you on the other hand might like them.
My main snare is an 8" x 14" Pearl Free-floating Snare made from Brass.
then I have a 5" x 14" for tighter stuff (Stewart Copeland type of tuning)

Why not build your own-that's going to be my next project.

Hey thanks Tim. I was hoping youd respond. Its not for me, its for our drummer. I dont really play drums so building one isnt really gonna work. He asked me to try and gather some info for him about snares, this will be the first snare hes upgraded to off his set, so this is a new process for both of us. He actually said "I need to get some info outta someone who knows drums like no other." I figure you're the man around these parts drum wise so...

We're looking for a snare sound that really pops and sounds like a wooden board thats being hit. Something that really cracks. Staind has a real nice snare sound on tracks like 'Spleen', if you are familiar with them. Mudvayne, again if familiar, has a nice snare sound at the beginning of 'Everything and Nothing'. We're looking to accomplish somthing like this (I know theres no substitute for the real deal but...) without the vented OCD snare or something real expensive.

Again, we're trying to keep the price under $400, but if you could recommend anything for cheaper that you think will get the job done that would be great. Thank you sir.

My younger brother's drummer, Chris Pyle (His dad is the drummer from Lynyrd Skynyrd) is using a Pearl 5.5" x14" Brass Pearl "Sensitone", and man that thing is AWESOME sounding! It's loud as hell, and has a huge sound.
It goes for around $220 or so.

I'm partial to Pearl Snares, because I like their Snare strainer system-It's really basic, and works really well.

I also like Ludwig's with the P-85 strainer.

So, if he got a Pearl Sensitone. He could also get a Shure Mic for the snare as well for under $400! (Hehehe)

that ocd vent is a bunch of bull**** that would make no difference in volume or sound. let's not get technical here look at what yer hittin' its a tin can with a head on it! if you want to find a snare thats reasonable go for a name brand that's been around for awhile i.e. pearl, tama, ludwig, etc. all make great snares for cheap. its all in head selection and tuning my friend. if you want beef use 2 ply heads if you want ring and ping use 1 ply ,for subdued sound go with coated or textured, wide open sound clear or white smooth. different snare wires will give a variety of sound; like dry use cable, more snare sound can be had by using wide 42 strand snares. some are made of bronze some out of steel and don't forget catgut. so you see theres a miriad of combinations and you can get a good sound out of a cheap drum. you don't have to pay a fortune for some west coast custom drum. they are nice to look at though:) but i've played literally thousands of gigs on an old tama steel shell snare nothin fancy.
