I spent about 24 hours over Friday and Saturday recording a four song demo for my friends' band. They're a three piece rock/"punk" band (but not like old school punk, or the poppy stuff you hear on the radio)...its kind of hard to describe. I threw together some quick rough mixes of their tunes and would like to hear what some people have to say about one of them. If you have any questions about gear, processes, etc, feel free to ask. Thanks!

is the link.

Edit: Fixed the typo in the link.

i like the ride.
the bass is kind of like...ehh cardboard-sounding

the snare is boxy.

cymbals sound good though

mics?

Well take what I say with a grain of salt... I'm listening in mono and it seems you have some phasing problems going on... other than that I really can't comment... as this isn't a genre I listen to on a regular basis.

Snare was a 57, bass a combo of SansAmp Bass Driver and a ATM 25 on a Fender Bassman through a cab with two 15s, overheads were Oktava MC012s.

Where are you hearing phase issues (instruments, not points in the song)? Thanks.

I'll give another listen when I get home on some real monitors that way I can tell you exactly what I'm hearing but right now it sounds like the midrange is being sucked out of the guitars maybe you eq'd there to make room for the vocals. I'm not sure... I'll listen again once home.

Intro doesn't sound heavy. Kick sounds muffled/muted/weak. Once the song starts, it isn't that much of an issue. But in the starting it doesn't pack that punch.

Guitars sounds very nice. I like the sound of the guitars and how they're played.

Can't understand the singer clearly. Maybe turn up the vocals slightly.

5:17 - 5:20. The kick sounds a little weak. Let me re-phrase, the drums don't sound heavy. I can tell they're played very nice. Maybe just make them a little heavier. :)

Somehow, the song overall sounds ok when all the instruments are going on but in slower areas but heavyness is missing.

Just my impression. I understand that may be the sound you're actually going for. :) This is just my opinion, so please take it with a grain of salt. :)

Nice song overall!

Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean when you say that things lack heaviness, but I'm not going for a "mall punk" Triple Rectifiers and triggered drums type of sound. If thats not what you meant, please let me know what you do mean.

As for the vocal intelligibility, the singer has a nasal voice to begin with, and he had a cold when we recorded which didn't help things.

The beat at 0:06 for example doesn't feel like "bang" or like kick packing a punch. I think to better explain it, lower frequencies seem like they could use a boost. So eq'ing up bass and kick below 200hz somewhere would make it heavier in my opinion. I'm a newbie in eq'ing so I might be wrong. I'm giving my opinion from a listener's perpective. :) Also like you said, you're not going for a mall punk type sound. I just might be looking for a current pop-rock sound from your track, hehe. :)

I think I like the vocals good enough. In the intro I can understand what he's singing but when the song is in full swing, it's hard to hear him in places.

I can hear, "We can't go on this way forever". Unless that's not the lyrics, then I'm wrong. :)

1:17 and onwards, I can't understand. I think if the vol. was a little higher I might hear him. You could be right, it could just be his cold. :)

Yeah, the vocals need to come up. That's one of the first adjustments that I noticed.

i'm listening on headphones...but

kick = cardboard, no low/punch to it. needs some meat.
ride = awesome
bass = cardboardy too
snare = weak too, sounds dead

guitars have a decent tone, i think it could use some extra mids or something though.

the weakest link in the recording is the drum sound overall. but it's still a pretty decent demo anyday.
