Im trying to decide wether to build my own p4 2.66 x2 1mb cache 533 bus
or a barebones p4 2.8 1mb cache 800 bus? specs below

Im using it for games and recording.

The dual core will only be about $20 more but no warranty and im hearing theres not a major advantage of going dual right now.

The 2.8 will have a one year warranty and since its all from one place easier to take up any problems.

dual core is mixed and matched parts trying to keep it under $160.

the other rig P 4 520 Processor & CPU Fan with Heatsink & 450W Case
Asus P5VDC-X Motherboard – 2 DDR400 & 2 DDR2-533 Memory Slots (Dual Channel Memory Support) – 3 PCI Slots - 1 PCIe x16 Video Slot - 1 AGP 8X Video Slot – 4 IDE and 2 SATA Devices – 8 USB2.0 – On Board 10/100 LAN and 6-channel Audio

I was going to wait till winter when the newest 3d card ship to buy one, but I found this Sapphire ATI Radeon X1300 - 512MB - PCI-e X16 Video Card for $50 its been returned.

I know a fast fsb will improve peformance but by how much?
What do you suggest?

I suggest wait a month at least. I wouldn't go with any of those chips, because for one, the dual core 2.66 on 533fsb is still slow (well for me that is), and the 2.8 800mhz there would be bearly any noticeable speed differences in both processors. I would either get a better dual core, or wait it out. The prices of the Pentium D's are dropping, and so are the Core 2 Duos.

It's not JUST the FSB, but the faster it is, the more overall performance of your system as a WHOLE improves.

Intel Pentium D 915 (2.8ghz dual core at the 800mhz), and maybe an ABIT mobo

That'll run you maybe a little more expensive, but not that much more... ($177.99) So $17.99 more.

BTW, the Dual Core vs Single Core, there's ALWAYS going to be mixed feelings about it. Half the people say it's just a waste of money, and the other half, say that it's a lot more powerful. I, myself, have the dual core pentium 930, and it's pretty quick So in my opinion, Dual core is worth it, but only get a faster dual core, not a 2.66ghz one or anything.
