Hey all!

For anyone who may be interested, I recently re-did my old mp3.com page. If you happen to like instrumental music, I'd love for you to check it out. There's stuff from several genres - pop, rock, industrial, neo-classical, romantic, impressionistic, ambient... I do a lot of stuff.

If you take a look, make sure you come back in a day or two, as my favorite instrumental track, "Luna", hasn't been approved yet.

Thanks, and please let me know if you have any comments!

Hey just listened to "Help You". Very cool. Its really refreshing to hear some real piano playing (I hope its real or Ill be embassed). Everything sounds really clean. I think over all it could use some more high frequency though to help balance out all the lows, which sound nice. What kind of synth are you using, I like the pads. The panning on the piano is perfect to my ears.

I keep listening to it on my headphones on repeat. Cool, I'm gonna check out more of your stuff definitely.

John

Okay, just listened to "Lapse". My mp3 player played the song after it downloaded and I thought I was still listening to the song "Help You" again. The song is definitely different melody wise, but the instruments sound exactly the same. Try experimenting with more sounds and your songs will be more powerful!

Good songs though.

John

:)

Those two songs were written a good year and a half to two years apart. You just happened to listen to two songs that use the same piano patch! Try some others. I think that you'll find they don't share a lot of similarities. :)

I hate to say it, but that isn't me playing. I would, but I don't own a MIDI keyboard, so I just sequence very carfully - well, I try to, anyway.

And my synths are a Roland MT-32, and a card that gets lambasted regularly on HR.com - the AWE64 Gold. :) I'm hoping to add a Sound Canvas, a D-50, and an Audigy in the not too distant future.

Thanks so much for listening!

Wow, I could of guess real playing, oh well still cool. Dont knock the Awe 64 card, that was my last card in my old computer and thought it had pretty good sound. I actually would have gotten another one but my new computer wanted a card with a PCI slot.

Ill listen to a couple more of your songs soon, though. Check mine out and let me know what you think too. www.mp3.com/sondriven

"Just a Dream" is the one I really worked hard on.

John

hey,

I dont know which one to listen to. I will wait for Luna, but in the mean time, is there a particular one that you think is better than the others?

Of what's there right now, I guess I'd recommend "The Truth About Frogs And Princesses" (my favorite uptempo song, other than "Luna"), "Help You" (my favorite ballad), or possibly "The Camelot Forest", since it was featured at mp3.com.

Luna is up,

pretty good. It did not go up past -6 I dont think, so you can use some normalizing.

Now this is a tune. I love tunes like this. intricate, detailed, invlolved.

There is nothing in the mix that I find annoying.

I would think that the bass and kick could come up some, but that all I can offer on the mix. You did good.

You should send it to futuremusic magazine.

Ok, what the heck, I listened to help you. WOW! I LOVE IT! I know now why its your favorite. again, I thunk that the kick could come up in volume, and again, I thought it had some beautiful instruments, and the melody and feel are just awesome. I am downloading it to my computer as we tpe. I dont do that often.
WHere did you get the sounds? and how long did it take you to do this one.

I like the fact that everything is in an ambient space. Makes it more pleasing.

the only thing I might question is that the sound of the main melody. Whats that "voice ooh"?

I am listening to camelot forest right now

CyanJaguar,

Thanks a lot for all the compliments.

You know, I've heard of Futuremusic, but I've never read it. I'm going to have to check it out - thanks for the lead.

And you're right... Now that I think about it, "Luna" is pretty quiet compared to a lot of the other stuff. I'm going to have to do something about that. Now, when you mention the bass, which one do you mean? I actually have two bass parts in that song - a more active one that isn't too low in timbre, and a sub-bass that mainly just punctuates the beat every once in a while (except during the middle eight, where I have it playing whole notes). I'm assuming you mean the main bass, right? I had to be really careful with the sub-bass, because I did want the song to rumble a bit, but it shakes my room if I don't keep it under control. :)

But now that you mention it, the main bass is buried in the mix a bit. I wouldn't want to make it stick out too much, but you'd bring it up a bit, huh?

On to "Help You". Hah, you're totally onto me. You're right, it's "Voice Oooh". :) Does it annoy you? I've tried so many times to use a different instrument for that melody line, and so far nothing seems to fit. I originally picked that patch because it was the closest thing I had at the time to a human voice. I had intended to record the song as a standard "with vocal" tune, but the subject was really personal. I knew the person I was writing about would hear the song, and I knew I'd catch hell for it.

I'm guessing that I wrote the song in one sitting - probably 2-4 hours. But I can't remember for certain, because this was actually back in February of 2000. I added the tag at the end, where the song changes keys and then goes back to the original, in May of that year.

You might be surprised, but along with the Voice Oooh, Fantasia, and Piano patches are all from the AWE64Gold's default 4MB GM soundfont! I'm really pleased with how the piano turned out. I'm not really sure how I did it, because ... I dunno, sometimes when I'm writing a song, I'll just zone out - and the song will almost feel like it's writing itself.

There's a Synthex bass pad, which I'm sure I got from Hammersound (www.hammersound.net). And the drums, I'm not even sure. Probably hammersound also, as that's probably where about 60% of my patches come from, but I've never used that drum patch for anything else.

I keep telling myself I'm going to try a remix of the song at some point - it's one of those cases where I'm really really happy with what I have, to the point where I'm almost afraid to touch it (even if it feels incomplete). When I do, I'll try bringing the kick drum up a bit.

Thanks for listening!! Please let me know if you have any other comments, you or anyone else.

Hey,

I ended up downloading "Camelot forest" as well. I did not downoad Luna though.

No, the voice ooh did not annoy me. It just sounded less pro than the other stuff.I guess it was the fact that it was not legato. You know what would be mighty? Someone with a jazzy type voice actually oohing that part

The mixes sound great as they are. I love the drum pattern on "help you". The song is really amazing.

I agree with you Cyan, Help is a great song. I love the composition.

Thanks again for the really kind words.

I'll toy with the melody on that song a bit - see if I can't find a better instrument for it. I like the idea of having someone actually "Oooh" the notes, too.

In the meantime... do you think that there are too many songs on the page?

Hey Eurythmic, just checked out Luna. Cool song. Definitely made me want to dance! About the mixing, I think it could use a more punchier kick, one that hits a lot harder than the one youre using. What drum machine are you using anyway??

I really like the melody of the lead synth. Crafty. But, Im not as crazy about the patch though. It sounds a little cheesy to me. I think you need one that almost has a little more bite to it, possibly with a little distortion or something.

The synth bass sounds kinda generic. But maybe youre going for that certain sound. The mix overall is great though besides the kick, but thats just my ears and speakers here. Keep it up!

John

Camelot Forest,

Good job on the mixing on that one. I could really hear it on a wierd dream fantasy game or something. I like the soft pads behind the mix. And the breathy synth works into the mood of the song very well. I couldnt hear anything wrong with this one.

Sondriven, great suggestions for Luna. I'm off to try a remix right now, in fact. :) I'll see if I can't upload it later on tonight.

Yuck, maybe another time. I don't know what it is, but lately, every once in a while my hard drive will decide that recording is just too tough for it to do.

So, I guess it's time for a defrag. Well, it's really time for a new computer and a fresh installation of Windows, but hopefully the defrag will do for now. :-/

Good luck to you on that computer, mine was giving me fits last night. I think it had to do with it running for about 8 hours and recording, moving large chunks of data and such. A defrag did help.

Neat!

This is probably the most plays I've ever gotten in a single day before, and I know that most of the hits must have come from here - outside of this forum, I haven't even advertised yet - heck, I haven't even told my friends. :)

Thanks a lot guys. Hopefully I'll have that remix tomorrow.

Just listened to "Lapse" - I'm not a big electronica fan, so I opted for the "tamer" of the tunes, I guess. The levels seem to be an issue for you from the other comments I've read. They could stand a boost on this tune also. I don't really dig the string patch / piano interplay on the "breakdown" (for lack of a better word); it seems to clutter & interupt the flow of things somewhat. I also think that it would sound better with a wider stereo image - perhaps a good reverb plug or something could help with that.
All-in-all, a really good tune. I'd like to hear it on a real grand with real strings - I think I would be moved. :D
Also, if you're just programming & not playing, then you're doing a hell of a job. Now, go out & get a damn MIDI keyboard!!! :D

Or better yet:

HEY!!! SOMEBODY SEND THIS GUY THAT CHEAP ASS CASIO THAT'S IN YOUR CLOSET THAT YOU NEVER PLAY!!!

I wouldn't say no to that. ;)

You know, I'm going to have to rewrite "Lapse". I could make the arrangement a bit better, and normally I'll boost the levels on a MIDI recording (or at least compress lightly), and widen the stereo spectrum a bit, but I didn't do any of those things on that song. I guess I didn't really think anyone would care about it, with other "meatier" (?) pieces available. You never can tell!

You might give "Help You" a try. It's another ballad that people seem to really be digging.

Both "Help You" and "Luna" are soooooooo close to inching into the top 100 (for their genres, of course).

Thank you very much for listening and commenting, jitteringjim! :D
