Say, has anyone else had a chance to listen to anything? Are there any other comments?

Sorry man, mp3.com and me just do not agree :)

Posted elsewhere?

Well...

Not exactly.

It's pretty unrelated, but there are some covers posted on my webpage:

http://www.geocities.com/pacoconqueso

If speed is your issue with mp3.com, the mp3s on that webpage are actually hosted in my personal webspace. I just use geocities because I don't have time to work with html anymore.

I'll hopefully be posting back with a remix or two later on though, and I'll put those up in my own webspace. I can never keep anything in there for too long though, because space is limited and I like the exposure that mp3.com gives.

Gah!

Cakewalk still won't work.

I've tried defragging, I've even tried using my backup hard drive for audio data. It won't play more than a couple seconds of anything without stopping.

Can too many DX plugins cause this?

Naw, speed isn't an issue.... I'm sitting on a rather high-speed line here (OC-3)....

My issue is mostly that :

1) I have to sign up for their regular spam to listen,

2) They cookie the hell out of my browser, (my *nix boxes HATE that)

3) You have to wait often 2 weeks to see a new song that was JUST finished show up, and be 'approved' (We tested the theory that they actually listen and approve each song by posting an mp3 that repeated over and over, 'mp3.com sucks the (edited out due to extreme crudeness)...', they posted it without question, and without any language warning...)

4) Space is limited, and servers get loaded down quite often,

5) The look is SO 90's! The pages are so covered in ads and ugly!

6) They are owned by Universal/Vivendi! Independents supporting the major industry? Ick!

7) You have to p4p for p4p? Huh? And $20 a month? Jeeze, I can get gigs of space with my own domain for that....

Anyways, I won't go on, there's more, lol, but I choose not to associate with them :) I'll check out your tunes elsewhere, and if you want another free spot to post your stuff, drop them on the site I run (100% indies, and volunteers running it). You probably already know what it is, and I don't wanna come off like I'm advertising. 'Approval' is instant, who's to say what music should be approved, and what shouldn't... And everything will get more customizable as time goes on. New version due in the next couple weeks (more manageability, etc.)

I've seen DX plugins screw up often, what version of DX is installed on your system, and what OS?

It's DX 7.0. This problem first happened when I installed DX8 - suddenly, Cakewalk would NOT play audio at ALL. The HD usage meter would jump all around for a few seconds until finally it'd just stop. So I used DirectX Buster to revert back to 7.0, and all was fine until now. Last night, it started doing the exact same thing as before - regardless of whether I'm actually using a plugin or not. The only change I can trace it back to, is that I installed a small distortion plugin that I thought I'd try using. But I uninstalled it, defragged, and that didn't help.

I'm running Windows 98. I know I'm way past due for a fresh installation, but I'm trying really hard to wait until I finish putting together my new computer...

What do you think? Can having too many plugins installed do this? Even if you're not actually using them?

Hm, I removed some, and that didn't work.

I'm working with the last 10% of my hard drive. I know that's a performance hit - I'll try moving some files around. How frustrating!

I don't think having too many plugins 'installed' would do it, although it is possible that stacking too many plugins would.

It's possible that the revert to DX7 could have corrupted some base files, possibly reinstalling DX7 could help, but no guaruntees.

It's also possible that the latest plugin you installed corrupted something, especially if it was designed for a higher version of DX... If, perchance, you installed a plugin while under DX8 and reverted to DX7 after it, corruption would most definately occur...

I hate to say it, but as a tech, the easiest way to deal with the issue is a scratch install.... Otherwise it's guess and check...

I assume DX8.0a was used, and it's 98SE?

I actually did reinstall 7.0 - DirectX Buster removed 8.0 (yes, 8.0a) completely.

That was a month or two ago, and everything's been working fine, up until yesterday.

I'm actually using the original Win98, with SP1. Ancient, eh? :) Been thinking about maybe grabbing an OEM copy of 2000 with one of my new computer's parts. Then maybe I'll do some kind of dual-boot setup.

I sooo wish there was more audio software available for *nix boxes.... I would have no need for microsoft products anymore!

Most of the windows updates for pre SR2 will get you as close as possible to SR2 (SE), but are unreversable once installed, so if you drop them in and it screws things up more.... Welp, you know what ya gotta do.

With my *nix boxes I redo them once every few years (hot upgrades are soo easy, aside from recompiling the kernal of course, then I gotta cold boot), with my windows boxes, I wind up doing it every six months at least...

Boy, I hear you. I've got about a year and a half logged on this installation, which means I'm just begging for problems.

I liked Win98 at first. I mean hey, it's a heck of a lot better than Win95, right?

But now that I need something more, it seems like WinMe, Win2000, and WinXP all have major problems that prevent any one from being the best all-around solution that Win98 has been for me.

And as tempting as it would be to just chuck Microsoft and go with Unix/Linux, or even a Mac, the fact is that DOS and Windows run everything. I don't want to give that up!

Anyway, I'll post back later if I get this problem solved.

In the meantime, are there any more comments from the peanut gallery? I've gotten a lot of great ones so far, but I also know that plenty of you are listening and not posting. :)

Woohoo!

"Luna" has cracked the top 100 (in genre). :) I'm happy!

Last night, I cleared off a good portion of my hard drive, and now I'm working more towards the middle of the media. That must have been my problem, because Cakewalk is working fine now.

Low resources will always get yah.... Probably ran out of swap space and that's why it went dead part way through.

W.

It can't be that, I always lock my swap file.

Anyway, I'm all out of ideas. I still can't get Cakewalk to run properly, and I don't know if I'm going to be able to order a new CDRW drive for at least a few weeks.

So no remixes for now, I guess! My guess is that the problem lies much deeper, like maybe a Windows installation that's finally corrupted beyond repair. The entire performance of my computer has not been what I'm used to lately; I've even had a few hard lockups in the past few weeks - something that's not happened since I built this computer. No good!

I'll post again when I've got some new stuff. Thanks again for listening!
