Anyway I feel better about the low end of this mix (especially the kick) than I ever have about any of my mixes. I think it actually sounds pretty decent down there. From 200 up it sounds like music to me, I don't know how to improve on it any more, haha.

If anyone has crit/comments on this mix let me know. It's around -14 dbfs. I think it sounds about as good that compressed as it does uncompressed (-20) so I barely did anything in the mastering stage other than a very subtle eq (mostly just to roll off under 30hz), some opto comp just to smooth the levels out a bit and a decibel and a half of limiting.

dig the opening groove. Good mix. Sounds pretty tight. I'd really like to hear what you've got in mind for vox on this.

This genre seems (imho) that the kick should sound a little less clicky/glassy. Good metal kick tho.

Nice organ work, well arranged. My only nit would be the snare drum sound, it sounds a little lifeless. I'd go for a nice deep natural sounding one. Organ reminds me of ELP, but I'm a bit older....
Love to hear it with vocals.

I'll take that as a nice compliment.

But then most dudes my age really don't listen to ELP. I love 'em though.

Native Instruments B4. The only organ plugin that I like even one bit.

I wish I could say I mic'd up a Leslie and recorded it. I know a couple guys that have done it a few times and they say that a B3 through a Leslie sounds so good that it's hard to make it sound bad, no matter how you mic it up.

The snare (Drumkit From Hell 2) that I used just doesn't seem to have a "deepness" to it, but it's just the one I'm used to and I tend to default to it. DFH comes with two other snares, a Pearl and a brass snare that I'll have to try. I'm just lazy.

Drumkit from Hell is obviously a metal oriented sample library so that may be part of the metalness of the kick (although it doesn't sound very metal at all until I boost around 5k, a lot. In fact they didn't edit the samples in any way so the kick in general sounds relatively poopy until I work at it a bit. If it were me micing up and recording real drums, I'd probably use a kick with the head not tuned so loose, get a little more low resonance and a little less papery "smack" to it.

But that involves recording drums, and I have nightmares about ever attempting to record drums.

Now there are two versions. The second has a brass snare instead of a bronze snare, and the snare is a little more present.

Which one of the two is better? Opinions please.
