I just got myself a pair of Tannoy Actives. They are my first set of real monitors and I just wanted to know if anyone had some suggestions of professionally produced material that is really good, and stuff that you think is kinda crappy. I'm just trying to train my ear a little. Thanks........Josh

The Steely dan 2 against nature is awesome. John Mayer's Album "room for squares" is almost perfect, especially drums. I don't know how good it is, but for a reference CD on my latest project I was using Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American, and things turned out ok. Another one that I just think is a wicked album is Blink 182's new one. Scoff if you will, but that album is tight. If not for reference, then definitely for listening. :D

heavy metal albums

how 'bout Helloween's Master of The Rings . I check that album on home-stereo's and it still sounds friggin' open/amazing.

The 1st album of Dire Straits (same) is very nice produced too.
And Love over Gold....

My personal opinion is that a lot of the drums on 'Room for Squares' are synth. Listen to the drums on "Wonderland" - if that isn't synth - it might as well have been.

Direstraits is good. They don't use too much bass. Their sound is crisp and clean.
