Hi Folks-

Just put the finishing touches on this mix. This is a new tune of mine.

Does anything stand out as out of place in the arrangement?

Are the element levels okay? Are vocals too loud/low? Are the guitars too up front/recessed? Anything sound out of balance?

THANKS for any comments you care to offer...even if you think all is fine.

Best-

Kev.

wow :D
almost perfect right there, good job

i think the bass and kick needs to come up a little bit
leave the vocals like that,
more meat for the snare, its too dry

everthings on the right place

On first listen, excellent job! Sounded very well balanced. Some minor tweaking is all. Maybe a touch of verb on the bax. Cool tune!

That's a cool arrangement. It had my attention the whole time. The playing and instrumentation are great as well. Did it take long to come up with the whole song or did it come all at once, just out of curiosity.

jerberson- More meat or more reverb on the snare? Is the tone off, IYO, or do you want to hear more "space" around the element? I'm thinking the bass guitar needs a hair of boost too. The kick though, at least on my playback system, screams through at me. Thanks for the insights!

7string- Little more depth and space on the bgv's? Done...but I think just a little. I have them fairly compressed and chorused. Thanks for the comment.

Billy- I had the frame of this song written rather quickly, but I didn't like the first melody I came up with. So I recorded the instrumental bed (I play all the instruments save the drums and lead guitar) and set to writing the lyric...which although "sounds" like a love song, it's really a song about addiction. While I was writing the lyric, I worked with the melody ... and this is the end result. The two parts ... lyric and melody were the last things done ... and in some cases (the part: I don't care what anyone thinks...) were created as I was recording the vocal. Glad you liked it. Thanks for chipping in!

dam, usually i can throw down a nit pick but this sounds good.

only one thing, the vox seem a little over effected.
i know you're trying to hide, and well the vox are not my thing really, but take some of the chorous (effect) off.

but really, good!

G- I have two different effects - a "on the dry side" delay one in the verse - a more heavily effected phaser on the chorus. Which one struck you as being too "over done"?

Thanks!

Kev.

the chorous. not such a big fan of the phazer.

but really, it's good.

Still... I have it laid on pretty thick ... I'll experiment with a lighter touch. Thanks for the perspective.

Best,

Kev.

Cool song - great arrangement and instrumentation. I personally liked the phaser on the vox for the chorus. I agree that the snare needs some depth -a little reverb and you're done. Nice job...

Thanks DC. I just experimented w/ trimming the phaser back. Then someone made the comment that if it's not obvious, then people will just think something is wrong w/ the vocal. I hadn't thought of it that way.

What do folks think of the level of the lead vocal in the chorus. I've had some comments that it might be a couple db too low.

Is there a consensus here on that too? Or should I leave it be?

Thanks!

Kev.

k-dub, Great job! It kindof reminds me (just a little bit) of the type of arrangement and sound that Bread (David Gates) had in some of their stuff. I really liked it. One thing, I can barely make out what is being said during the falsetto part, "nobody .....something.....me like you". I really like that part, but I can barely hear that. I think you could get away with turning the volume on that part up and it would still leave plenty of headroom for the transition that comes in after that when it suddenly gets louder.

Great job.

Thanks for the help, Rick! I've actually gone back in this morning and done several fixes, including the one you mentioned. I agreed that the chorus was WAY too back in the level and I brought it much more forward. I also had to bring the bass up and drop the snare back...while applying a little more meat and reverb (as suggested above also). In addition, I brought the toms forward and pushed the cymbals back...and I rebalanced the harmony vocals and brought them a touch more out front.

So much to do. So piss poor at it. :D

Hey Supercreep! I'm glad you like the tune. Hopefully you'll like this version even more. Thanks for the comment.

New mix is up. Is it done yet?

Best,

Kev.

Hi Musezack-

I recorded 2 separate acoustic guitar tracks miked w/ AT4050...panned wide l/r. The drums were contributed by Frank Basile of www.smartloops.com.

The electric guitars were done through a pod by a friend of mine.

The vocals were through a www.wunderaudio.com PEQ-1r preamp and a BLUE Dragonfly mic. (the guitars were done thru the same pre).

The compressor was a RNC on the vocals and acoustic.

I tracked the bass (a Quest) direct through the above pre and a DBX 166 compressor.

The keyboard parts are pretty much all soft synths...primarily the EastWest Silver edition of their orchestra product.

The recording program is Sonar 4 PE.

I think that's it. If you have more questions, I'd be glad to answer.

Kev.
