This is a track I'm working on for my first instrumental album. The track is called "The Landing". I want the tracks to sound as good as I can possibly make them, so don't pull any punches on the mix criticisms.
Thank you!

typing while listening... very cool lo-fi sound in the beginning.. very explosions in the sky sounding (which is more than likely what your going for). kick sounds very plastic and snare lacks body.

might just be my ears.. but the hole mix sounds hallow as if you cut mids in the master track . it seems very clean and very nice, but just sounds hallow.

maybe its because there's no bass? or if there is its very very low.

Hmmm, what are you listening to it on? The bass doesn't come in until the distorted guitars do. I noticed the snare needs to be louder during the distorted part too, maybe that will fix it, but I'm not sure what to do about the kick to make it sound less plasticy

Im listening on a decent pair of headphones (not buds) .. and i know when the bass comes in (though i think it should come in the when drums do at a high octave.

2nd listen through the distorted guitars sound a bit cloudy. check your 2k range.

Ok, perfect, that gives me a lot to work with. i'll be busy tonight haha thanks man

Sounds pretty good. I think the bass drum is little too loud though. I think it's eating up the headroom in your mix. I turn that down and maybe add some top end to some other instruments, like the guitars. The mix sounds good, but it lacks some air. It also doesn't seem to have much width. I can tell it's stereo, but it doesn't have that huge wide sound, but maybe that's just my system.

Agree with chandlerhimself, the kick seems to be a little too hard for the rest of the rhythm levels.
Also, try to spread some higher frequencies to see how that pans out.
And regarding the leads, (and this is personal taste :p) a little vibrato now and then could sit nicely on them

It also doesn't seem to have much width
I agree that it could use more "width." Also, the drums lack some life and the mix as a whole seems to lack some dynamic range.
I love the guitar in the beginning, though. Overall, pretty awesome mix. It could still use a little more work though.

I'd probably take the kick down a couple notches (maybe just trim some of its lowest frequencies, say below 80hz). I think this will help the little bit of bass guitar that's there come through, but that may still need to be raised in the mix.

The drums are panned center and as a result feel squished. You should at least pan the cymbals and toms 10-20% left/right as if you were sitting at the kit. If it's a live drum kit (doubtful) then you may need to invest in more mics or tinker with the mics you have to increase the width of the sound field. If it's virtual drums (likely) then all the controls for an effective pan setup should be there. I tend to use the overhead mics in superior drummer a lot, otherwise I find the controls for panning (in particular for the cymbals) to be weak/insufficient.

Overall guitar sounds solid.

I have panned the toms so that is fixed, i will provide an updated file soon after i have fixed some other things you guys mentioned. The problem I'm having with panning the hi-hats/cymbals is that they are mixed into the same audio file. i don't have the midi for it so I am automating a pan from left to right as it switches from the hi-hat to the ride/crash.
thanks again for all the advice, this track will be sounding great here pretty soon :D

Alright here is the new version. I took all your guys' advice and re-mixed it http://db.tt/Xpk0RrpD

I didn't get the opportunity to hear your earlier mixes, but I quite like this one. I like the way the different parts of the song lead you on to what is coming next. You did a good job of painting a sonic landscape.

Awesome thanks, I'll be posting some more tracks from the album in the coming weeks, I'm so glad for this forum so I can get great feedback and make my tracks sound as good as possible:listeningmusic:
