I know that Michael will stop by to answer questions if anyone post up some questions for him. :thumbs up:

Yup. Saw that in an email from Oktavamod today. Listened to the samples. Wow! Somebody did a great job recording those samples. This could be one of Michael's best yet.

Michael J has re-branded his business as Michael Joly Engineering.

I received an e-newsletter from him the other day.

Still hopes he stops by. He has a vast knowledge of microphones.

The Joly mic sounds great, but in the samples on his site, i actually preferred the U87 every time.

of course, it costs ten times as much.

The MJ looks like it might be a good all rounder.

Thanks for all the kind words! That "Somebody" is my assistant and monster finger style guitarist / singer Max Cohen.

btw - all the blue text links below were originally put there by Homerecording's spam bots, not me. But then I changed them to point to my site - touche!

Max has been handling all my shootouts for about a year now. He's using a dual channel Focusrite preamp, no EQ or compression. The mics are stacked vertically, headbasket-to-headbasket so there's no arrival time difference from source to mics. The guitar is one of his Larivee axes, about 18" back from the neck / body joint. Vocals done just about the same distance back (way beyond proximity effect distance in other words). Single take, both mics recorded at the same time.

We've got a backlog of shootouts I haven't had time to get to - write up new mod pages with sound file links. Studio Projects C1 ... all kinds of stuff ... including:

The final pre-production engineering sample of the long-awaited MJE-47H Capsule Head for the Oktava MK-012. Looks like a baby Geffel UM 70 and sounds wonderful. This is going to be packaged in a paperboard box, with foam cut-outs for the MJE-K47H capsule head and also cut-outs to hold a full Oktava MK-012 set with body, three capsules, pad and adapter. This will allow folks to buy just the MJE-K47 capsule head and use / store their existing '012 set, or buy a complete MJE-K47H / MK-012 set up.

I'm not going to officially announce this product until have at least a couple of hundred built up, tested, boxed and ready to ship. This is going to be a huge seller. Release date will be mid November.

Also have a new, upgraded MXL 990 mod - this version replaces the stock multi-layer cylindrical headbasket with a new, single-layer angled headbasket to reduce coloration from internal reflections. The basket is done in a Nickel finish paint, no MXL branding remains, my MJ logo and "Michael Joly Engineering - Cape Cod, Massachusetts" branding appears instead. Overall it has an M 49 look and very open sound.

Let's see...what else...pretty far along on a tube mic to replace the Apex 460 which I've stopped mod'ing do to increasingly poor quality control by the factory.

...oh, I scored a huge quantity of New Old Stock (NOS) Oktava MK-012 mics "ASM branded" (the former, disgraced distributors who initiated the un-authorized Chinese copies and were subsequently fired by Oktava). These new mics have been sitting unsold in the factory for 8 years as Oktava did not want to release them with the ASM branding. I'll take these in, do my full Premium Electronics upgrade on them and re-brand the bodies with a sticker over the ASM. So these will be branded Oktava MK-012 / Michael Joly Engineering etc. And btw - I got them at a great price so I'll pass discount on to my end-users.

... also pretty far along on two ribbon mics - a "shortish ribbon" (R121-sounding) and a "long ribbon" style.

... going back to Shanghai in October for the big Pro Light & Sound Expo to meet with my current vendors, review progress, tweak designs and look for additional suppliers. I want to build a line of microphone accessories.

re: China / US business - I took a lot of heat on GearSlutz several years ago around my decision to work with Chinese vendors (long story made short: It is not possible buy LDC capsules in the US and make mics at a price most people want to pay. You want that? Go buy Manley with Josephson capsules $$$). Bottom line - I've created four Cape Cod-based jobs with this local / international strategy.

Anyway, thanks for all the continued support and kind words. Thanks to folks like you OktavaMod / Michael Joly Engineering continues to grow while providing boutique microphones at attractive prices...and creating a few jobs on Cape Cod as well. later, Michael

No. Thank you Michael for taking the time out of your busy schedule to stop by.

I can't wait for all of your new products to hit the market. For I have been very pleased with your many boutique microphones that are in my active microphone locker within the studio and in the field recording.

Microphone accessories huh? Please elaborate on this Michael. I'm envisioning all kinds of pretty things.

I'll be sending you an email with my advanced order of two MJE-K47H capsule heads :thumbs up:

To bad about the downhill slip of quality at the Apex 460 factory. Glad that I got one early in the game. It will be interesting to see which tube mic/company you choose for a replacement.

Hi Michael,

If you're still monitoring this thread, any update on when the MJE-K47 capsule head for the MXL 603 bodies will be available again? I have a PE 603 body here lonely and waiting.

Thanks

I just go and change them to point to my site if they alter the meaning of my post. The most annoying one is waves because it inappropriately capitalizes the word.

Great tip! I looked at the text in the editor and didn't see any HTML tags so I didn't even try re-directing with links. Your suggestion works great! I really don't like getting my words hijacked as adverting, grrrr....

That one is pretty far down the list of priorities - after all the other stuff I mentioned above. I wanted to make some changes to the capsule head and packaging instead of just re-releasing the same version. And now that I scored LOTS of MK-012 mics that will be my go-to SDC platform for a quite a while.

I just find it entertaining to write, keeping in mind not to use such linkable words ..... a challenge at times.

How about being able to purchase MJ badges for all of the MJ modded microphones that I have had done in the past?

Agreed------------it would be nice to have MJ badges on my 603's instead of MXL. The cert. of authentication is cool but a badge would be better.

Please, please, please!.!
I promise not to screw up the mounting of the badge and assure that it's not upside down. :D
