Hello. I just joined this forum and wanted to introduce myself. I'm a guitarist and I've been playing for 20+ years off and on. I just recently got the bug to start recording some of my stuff at home and have been looking for a friendly Internet community where I can research and ask questions for help in building my studio gear up and also with help on software questions and mixing/mastering.

I found a few other forums/sites where the people aren't friendly and don't like "newbie" questions, but this place seems different.

Looking forward to getting involved in the community and getting help and giving help where I can.

Hi. This place has friendly people, but there are a few who are rather direct and lack some manners. Get past this and you will see there are more good folks around here than bad. Just don't let a few dweebs ruin the experience for you.

Liam Kenny...budding dj

DJ or EDM producer? There is a difference.

I've looked into doing some song creation/producing for playing live dance(hence I am using Ableton Live), while I have learned a lot of cool new stuff (sounds, textures, etc.) I guess I am too old to get the hang of the new sound. If you are mixing, this is a great place to learn and get good feedback.

Hello, my name is Chris and I've been playing various instruments for over 20 years. I'm currently playing drums (or at least trying to) in a newly formed band. I've wanted to start to get into recording. I'm just starting to gather gear. I'm sure I'll be posting a lot of questions with some of the gear as I progress, this seems like a pretty helpful forum.

Hey Chris from Detroit. Big Lebowski fan?

Here is what I would suggest to get you started and make sure all of your purchases add value. Understand what you want to do (sounds silly, but first have your objective in mind like, live recording, home studio or combination of the two). Then research a little and determine if you will be doing DAW mixing or using something like a portastudio (or both). Once you have that, then your next moves should lay itself out. Interfaces, mics, monitors, room treatment will all stat to fall in place and your questions will be more succinct and advice here on the board more targeted.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your journey.

Hi, my name is Andrew... and I USED to run... but I STILL walk a lot. You could make the argument I'm STILL running, just at a slow pace

Hey guys and gals!

Just signed up after running across a few threads that I thought were very well done with good info and none of that pesky internet flaming bs or internet tough guys insulting everyone that isn't "in the club"... stuff that goes on nearly everywhere anymore. But anyways...

My name is James or Jimmy...they both get my attention :) and the project I am currently working on is called Neuromancer or NEURO. A heavy electronic endeavor that tries to walk the line of tracks with a heavy dance floor presence but also retain a healthy amount of musicality as well. I think I came out of the womb playing the alto sax...shortly there after the piano...then soprano sax...then guitar, then bass....a little later some poorly played drums until I eventually got some turntables. I turned that into a fairly successful DJ career, playing all over the east coast of the US and just about all of the biggest clubs and events at least once and for a little while was relatively known and in demand, at least in my region. Life kinda took over after getting married and going back to school...etc, etc...and I had to pull away from DJ'ing a bit more than I would have liked. However, during that time I purchased the necessary gear to do what I had always wanted to do all along...and that was produce my own music. Got back to playing my instruments, learned a few synths inside and out and over the next couple years learned everything else that comes along with producing just haven't perfected any of it yet. So I'm certainly not a noob but as with everything, still very hungry for more knowledge to better my craft...forever the student! lol

My current project has seen some success and had a couple tracks picked up by a couple different labels and my music just seems to grow by leaps and bounds, get immensely more mature and just plain better with each track I do.... almost to the point of doing exactly what I had set out to accomplish with that track.......almost. Which is absolutely wonderful to see all of the hours upon hours of studying and practicing and making really crappy music come full circle and start to have an end result that makes me smile...not grimace upon playing for friends for the first time. lol I have more than one label interested in signing me but one recurring theme I keep hearing is that my mixdowns aren't great. Your sound design is awesome! And the arrangement and vibe is good too...buuuut the mixdown just kills it for us. This is what I've heard more than once. So I'm really starting to feel good about what I'm putting down nowadays but my mixdowns take me FOREVER and are ultimately holding me back. I pull my hair out, stress out...and....and...its just not good, eventually putting out something that just doesn't have that overwhelming shine that it had inside my DAW! lol So I'll be perusing, doing lots of reading and posting and probably asking for some ears to listen a mixdown or two or three of mine and of course asking for the constructive criticism that comes along with that. :)

Enough with the running on of my fingers! Great board from what I've seen...excited to get to it! :)

Thanks,

James

Most every forum/community has them. So far I'm seeing that there's more good than bad and I'm enjoying being a part of the site.

Thanks for the post.

Hello

I record cds at home and use them to sell off the stage at my solo acoustic music shows . I began home recording three cds ago . I use albeton live 8 ,a tascam m164uf a 27 inch Imac with rokit5 monitors and a presonus tube pre amp coupled with a dueo of large diaphram mics. Most days the system is great other times I would gladly trade it for a four track reel to reel . The largest complaint I have is the Isolation of it all . Being at home it does allow me to get down a lot of materiel but I tire of being alone tangled in wires and headphones ( seems to actually slow the process ) I have and arsonel of books and on line help . At first it was in the kitchen then I built a studio sound room now its back to the living area. I find If I have to crawl into a cave I wont go in as often. All and all the elasticity of the home box out weighs the old way of getting things done . useually I start with my digital video camera on a tripod to catch Ideas and go from there

IMO limited funds keep the creative juices flowing. Like I had an old real to real that I used for delay cause I couldn't afford one of those fancy boxes. Most of the best music was made with limited technology/funds. House of the Rising Sun by the Animals was done on 2 BP. So, money should only be a challenge, not an excuse;)

Hey Jeb, from Na'lens, I think I spelled it right. I've been using Live for about two years now. Just moved to 8 (if you upgrade, you might want to stay with the 32 bit version as the 64 bit allows you to access more RAM, there are some downsides to it (like it is not optimized for 64). I use Ableton as much for a song creation tool as I do for final mixing. I will get a bunch of clips I record, play with the sequence, and when I have something, hit record on the arranger view and start the process of song creation. Trying to best figure out how to get it to stage with a few more people. I have to first find the lab rats willing to try it as it would require much practice to get it right.

You might want to look at some of the Portastudios, they move a lot better (I am guessing here as it is just an idea for now) and can get you out of the "box", since they have USBs and SD cards, you can dump your tracks back into Ableton to mix and polish up.

Welcome to the board.

hey guys, my name is Robert. I have been getting the newsletter for almost a year now. I am an IATSE (union) stagehand, musician, and an amateur recording engineer/producer. I work almost exclusively on Ableton Suite 8 and sometimes on Presonus studio one artist. I also really enjoy the newsletter, I have learned quite a bit about recording, as I started with Live sound engineering, it is a lot different in the studio.

Hi all,
