Newby, also Newby needs help. Oh lord do I need help!!!

Hi All.
I have been a "musician" (not everyone agrees) for almost 60 years. In all that time I have never tried home recording. Yes, the old tape player plugged into the desk with the resulting rubbish recording, but now with the advent of cheap computer recording equipment here we go.
HOWEVER, I wish I had read this forum before lashing out hard earned pension cash. I would say that to anyone starting out at HR. BROWSE THIS FORUM FIRST!!!.
I have a home computer that I built myself,

Intel core i3 540,
Gigabyte H55M-S2 board
4gig ram
CD/DVD drives x2
On-board graphics and sound (more of that later)
Windows Xp Pro sp3 (32bit) also Ubuntu 13:4 (64bit)
Seperate powered monitors
Aleses Multimix 8 USB FX mixer
Cubase LE5 (came with the mixer) for the Windows
Audacity for the Ubuntu.

Various bits and pieces including...
Vox Valvetronix VT30
Shure Unidyne III (Lovely lovely microphone, had it for years, since the mid '70s)
Trace Elliot Commando 15 bass combo. (Brilliant for lead work)
Couple of Epiphones; EB0 with bolt on neck, SG400 set neck. No glamour, but they work.
Yamaha keyboard.

OK so far so good.

My biggest problem to date is with Cubase LE5. The monitor button is greyed out. I can not hear (monitor) what I have recorded while trying to record the next track. I have used up my limited knowledge trying to get this feature to work, even fitting a SoundBlaster soundcard in stead of the built in audio but to no avail.

If anyone reads this and can come up with any suggestions I would be grateful.

hi everybody :) I'm Eli from Vienna. I found here so many helpful clues...thanks a lot hr-team <3

I've been playing keyboards for many years but haven't done much in the way of digital recording. I did get into fractal generated music for a while. I want to learn about the latest software and hardware so I can make an informed choice when I buy.

Hello, I am a Brazilian musician, currently studying a bit of guitar, bass and drums. I record videos in the "One-Man Band", where I play all the instruments.

Maybe others will weigh in, but you should be listening to the recorded stuff through the outs of the mixer. On the head phone outs. On mine setup, I have the headphone outs going to a multi-headphone connection. But if you are solo, your headphone jack should work.

So you ins and outs on your software should all be set to your mixer USB I/Os. SB you can remove, you don't really need it for monitoring. If you need specifics, the Cubase folks can help in further detail (you can post on the thread).

Hope this helps.

Warm welcomes to everyone! Looking forward to checking out your music.

Hello! I just joined the forum and here because I am starting to get the fever to build a home studio. Well, I should say getting the fever to build a standalone studio in my back yard because I have outgrown a small bedroom that was converted to a studio and practice space for my band. Please talk me out of it!

No way man! Misery loves company! lol

We all have an addiction/sickness here. It's a good thing man. Embrace it. :)

Oh thanks! I see how it is... lol... And to make matters worse, my wife wants me to build a studio...

Well then you are totally screwed. My wife said the same thing 5 years ago. Welcome to the fun house! :)

Trust what you hear in this forum. You will get setup better with less expense if you read the stickies and and ask questions. You won't get steered in the wrong direction here.

What's happening everybody. This is Reg. I'm a Bassist and newbie home recording enthusiast.

Hi, I'm a newbie ... just looking to acquire my first porta-studio and on the hunt for information .. Cheap and old, jus' like me !!?

Hello. I just joined this forum and wanted to introduce myself. I'm a guitarist and I've been playing for 20+ years off and on. I just recently got the bug to start recording some of my stuff at home and have been looking for a friendly Internet community where I can research and ask questions for help in building my studio gear up and also with help on software questions and mixing/mastering.

I found a few other forums/sites where the people aren't friendly and don't like "newbie" questions, but this place seems different.

Looking forward to getting involved in the community and getting help and giving help where I can.

Hi All. I'm a part time musician (writeleftwrite.com) interested in recording my practice sessions and gigs to help me improve and for use in marketing.
