Hello everyone! I am PCHZZZ! (peaches) I am finally deciding to do what I've always dreamed of doing and that's pursuing a music career. I've always found it easier to sing than to speak to people. They say great music comes from pain, and I have lived through a lot of painful moments in my life and I've written tons of songs that no one has ever heard I started writing when I was in middle school (about 2007) after my grandfather passed away. And I just thought that I wouldn't ever have a shot at being a singer/songwriter because I was overweight most of my life. Long story short fast forward to 2020 I lost weight got in shape and started gaining the confidence that I was able to do hard things because I had done one of the hardest things I had ever done in my life (and I mean harder than having kids). So here I am at 31 finally starting my music career and I have no idea where to start. I am attending LA Film School for music production, and it was suggested that we become part of a forum where we can work with like-minded individuals. So hello fellow artists! Help!

Hello. I have been involved in music for a long time. I wrote about 150 songs in the 70s and 80s. In the 2000s I recorded a bunch of stuff through a MOTU 2408 MKII into a Mac G3 into Audio Desk on OS9. I acquired some outboard gear (UA 610-2, RNC compressors, ART tube preamps, DBX tube preamps) and a pair of TLM 103s when they first came out when the Euro was weak ($1200 for the pair). I recorded the band my kids played in and they released an EP. Work took over my life and music has been on the back burner until recently. My 2011 Mac mini finally needed to be replaced, so last year I got an M2 studio and the Apollo X4 with a generous plug-in package. Revisiting the basic tracks in LUNA using only the UA plug-ins and have been happy with my results so far. Hope to provide and get some feedback from forum. Music is primarily singer-songwriter with some basic rock songs.

Hi Peaches and welcome. I am just an old (79) ex guitar amp tech' who has been helping a talented son get some recording kit together for 40 years! Many, many newbs come here, fly by and are never seen again but I have time to waste so here are some nuggets...

I don't know what the film school will tell you but you need a basic setup for recording. Whatever computer you have, if it is stable and runs win 10 or 11 it will be fine (I don't know mac but they all seem fine as well)
Microphone obviously and a Shure SM58 is as good as anything to start with but there are now some very decent Large Diaphragm Capacitor mics about at $100 up.

Next is an Audio Interface. Lot of those about but I can strongly recommend the MOTU M4. A Digital Audio Workstation, the software you use for everything is next. Unless the school want you to use something else, Cockos Reaper is a no brainer.

Some good quality closed back headphones and IF you can run to them some good monitor speakers but they will set you back $500 the pair for anything remotely useful IMHO.

Do you play an instrument and if so what? Your recording space will need some treatment but that can be discussed later.

Lastly, for now, DON'T be shy! Get a song or two bashed out and let folks hear it. I am deaf so never judge peeps work but there are good people here who will be VERY constructive.

Dave.

Hey new members, I go by Seeker here and on other music forums that I don’t visit much lately 🙁 Always seem to be on HR.com, though 🙂

There is the best wealth of information on this recording site IMHO, though some of the professional engineers (who were regulars at one point) may not frequent as often I will guarantee you searching your question, no matter how complex), will end up with quality results. Plus, you have current active posters still around.

I’m a knob and button guy so any questions on software recording, I know nothing. However, anything tape related or analog outboard chain or microphone or home studio construction/treatment or guitar and amp, or cables, I could probably give an answer to or lend opinion/help with. I don’t browse around enough but if you want my attention on something or a thread you post, send me a DM (top of the toolbar) and I’d love to participate.

Welcome to the site! 🤟🤟🤟

Thank you, Seeker. I am either going find some answers here or I am selling my Neo. Am I in the right place?

Hello, Im Xyrherris, I like to make EDM music, I have joined this forum for sharing knowledge or something else, glad that i found a very nice forum!

Hi Everyone.

I've been a Cubase user since SX5 but recently took a chance and purchased Pro Tools Studio Perpetual as I was curious.

Its a steep and frustrating learning curve but one that I hope will ultimately be rewarding.

I was looking around for a friendly and non judgemental forum to join so here i am.

Nice to meet you all.
