Hello all,

I am in a band (see us here www.gotwood.tk ) that has had 6 tracks recorded by someone who knew what they were doing, however since then we have written new songs and i want to record them myself as i intend to give the recorded tracks away on cd's to premote future gigs.

We have very basic equipment consisting of:

1 small condensor mic
1 dynamic microphone sutable for guitar cabinates and toms ect
2 condensor mics designed for vocal use

a samson mixpad 12

what i am suggesting doing is getting the band playing together, but just recording the guitars (two guitar one bass) from the mixer into a tape or directly into a computer, this can't really be altered but should be sufficiantly bright anyway.

the drums will be recorded afterwards while i play to the guitars, the dynamic mic will be at the front of the kit, the small condensor angled at the snare and hi hats (i use very few drums)

finally vocals will be recorded similar to the guitar and the track will be combined in cakewalk.

could this work, what would the quality be like? thanks, tom

if youre gonna record it into a computer, wich soundcard are you going to use, you`d have to get something decent.
If you dont have any recording interface for youre computer, and youre on a tight budget I would recomend emu 404, wich has been great for me.
If you hook it up correctly you could record 4 tracks at once, and have a chance to edit every single one.

secondly I would recomend you to use on mic on the kick drum, maybe the dynamic, a condenser could also do the trick.

the quality is entirely up to how you play and how you record, and also what you record with.

hope this helps a bit.

good luck

Its *chews fist* a Soundblaster 1024...

I have been thinking more about this, and as there are three guitars being recorded at the same time, i can capture all of them seperatly by panning one guitar all the way to the right, one all the way to the left - so i have one per channel, the bass guitar could then be recorded through the aux send.

this way will also let us still hear the guitar as we record it as we can have the audio going to the amp from the second aux send

the track will then be composed in cakewalk and i will record the drums while listening to it.

i will get a recording of my drums i have made with just two microphones up soon so you can hear what i need to do to it

the recording is here;

do you think that kick drum sound will do?

There are many ways to track your song and none are necessarily the correct way. You might want to do what you're suggesting only just track the drums initially and then the bass, guitars seperately and finally the vocals.

I listened to the drum track only on headphones, snare sounded ok but the toms and bass sounded a bit boomy.
