Pete - thanks for checking back...thanks for the call on the acoustic.....great helpful ears as always

sjcrts - thanks for the listen.......

I started listened to this few times before I read any of the comments. I started thinking HOLY SHIT!!! HE REALLY HIT THE JACKPOT WRITING THIS ONE. LOL...great song. Yeah...I wish I'd have written some this good too. :D

This sounds incredible. I agree with what someone said about hearing an improvement. Well played, well sung, well recorded, well mixed. Doesn't get much better than that :D

Nice work.

Great overall sheen on this tune, without being harsh. Wish I could do that.

Justin

There is all kinds of banjo on the board lately :D

This has a cool down-home feel to it (I think it is the banjo)...Very cool vibe to the tune. In a strange sort of way (and I'm not sure how I'm hearing this, but this is just what I thought of) it reminds me a tiny bit like "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd. There is some sort of strange, cosmic connection in my mind...but I'm not sure where it came from. :D

This is very cool! Keep it up, man!

:D

:)

Lead guitar on the right didn't sit right for me, but the track rules. I like the background concept but It might have been too quiet.

All the other stuff sounded great.

Doug

Nice job powder. My only suggestion would be to reduce the backing vocal just a tad to emphasize your vocals a bit more. Nice job on the mix and a good song.

Jagular - yeah man....if only it was mine......gives me something to aspire to .....thanks for listening

musical5 - thanks for checking it out man

boydrj - yeah, banjo's been all over the board! my brother's leaving in about two weeks (the banjo player)....so this is probably my last banjo submission.....

Doug H - i'll see what i can do w/ the electric..maybe level as opposed to eq...thanks for the help

rpe - thanks man.....i'll see what i can do about that vocal....maybe back it off , maybe repan....i'll try a few things

Very cool feel. I wouldn't mind a little more definition in the low mids. It seems to get a little crowded there. Great job, I love this kinda shit.

Damn, I'm a huge UT fan so I was expecting this to fall way short, but you did great. Great drum sounds... great vocal sounds...

Great sounds.

I wish I could do that...

Chris

Very nice job-Good clean sounds-good performances-good song too. Banjo is cool-Nice guitar sound very appropriate for the song. Vocal performance very good-maybe the backup is a little loud-it seems to almost cover the lead on a word here and there...compression or maybe just turn it down a tad? Or leave it...Nice drum sample sounds-snare is too loud for how repetitive it is--err how loud it is accentuates its monotony--IMO. But overall this is a great sounding mix-just about radio ready sounding to me, for what thats worth...Nice to hear something from you.

TexRoadkill - thanks for the suggestion.....how would one attain more definition in the low mids?? eq'ing the bass?

groucho - thanks for checking it out.......i'm glad i didn't let you down too much.........

Stratomaster - i agree w/ you on the drum sample issue......my real solution needs to be a real drummer, but i'll see what i can do.......thanks for checking it out as always

Hey Powder, I agree you're sounding better with every post. I'm hearing a lot more confidence in those vocals. Keep it up man!

Twist

twist - thanks for listening......i'm glad you can hear a difference in the recording........it's been about a year since i started posting in the mixing clinic (been a member for awhile before that)....and i'm very happy with my progress.....it's almost embarasing to listen to my earliest mixes..............but it's amazing how quickly one can improve by taking the advice of others here.........thanks

Great work powder. Vocals are really nice. Your best yet! Banjo sounds great. Mix really nice as well. I could still stand to have the snare down a hair, but just a nit.

Fine, fine work. I'm glad I found this and bumped it up. ;) :)

You need to use that banjo in one of your originals if you have not done so yet. I always enjoy your songs. Keep it up!

Powder, this is pretty great. New Madrid is one of my all-time favorite songs. The quality of the recording is worlds better than anything I can do, so I'll refrain from commenting too much on the mix. The only thing I will say is that I'm not partucularly crazy about the background vocals. Rather than doing them an octave lower, it might be cool to try doing 'em an octave up. Some of my favorite Tweedy background vocals are the really high pitched ones he's been doing a bit more lately.

Again, though.....this is great.

If you're interested, check out something I just posted....it's my first real try recording, and I only used one mic for drums and guitars, but I think it turned out pretty okay. My fondness for alt-country might not shine through too much, but you might like where it's headed.

Nice mix, guitar on the right is at a perfect volume and banjo is as mentioned, quite pleasant.

skids - thanks for checking it out man....i hear you on the snare....i was listening in the car today and noticed that a bit...just a hair should probably do.......it's my brother on the banjo, and we haven't worked on any of my songs with it, and he's leaving town in about a week, so that might not happen anytime soon, but we'll see.........thanks.

Mike BL - that's great you've heard it, it seems like most haven't. i love u.t. .....'new madrid' is definitely one of my favorites of theirs but i like a lot of em....i glad i didn't completely disappoint. i'm just teaching my brother to do harmony vocals (he's the low part) and he's still struggling 'finding his parts', but maybe i'll retrack those after he gets a little more practice.......i'll check out your tune

lynx - thanks for listening man....

This, I had to bump. You HAVE to be in the running for the "most improvement in X months" award. If you still have this as a work in progress file, I'd agree about pulling your brother's vocal down a tad, mostly b/c it IS a lower harmony; (his first couple of lines stick out the most)... but dude, that's it, and even that is discretionary, I think.

Check your PM, and do me a favor...Please PLEASE PLEASE tell me how you did this... I don't need equipment specs and crap, lol...and I don't care how far away the mics were and stuff...just tell me what kind of room your recorded in, and what you did (EXACTLY) to the vocal and banjo tracks in terms of EQ/compression/reverb, etc. I think you just recorded this very well to begin with, and it really inspires me ... Well, that...and the fact that I haven't even opened a wave editor in months; what's that saying? "Absence makes the heart really want to track something?"

I don't know the song, but i certainly am impressed with your version. I would like the lead vocal to be at least as loud as the banjo. Didn't sound like it was on my monitors. See what others think.

Nice recording and nice mix too!

ditto that exactly.....

bad joro....missed this thread completely...bad joro :D

and it really inspires me ... Well, that...and the fact that I haven't even opened a wave editor in months; what's that saying? "Absence makes the heart really want to track something?"

just hit the little red button man........ya know? :D

Chris - thanks for the comments. I actually have pulled the backing vocal and the drums both down a slight touch, but I haven't reposted it......check your PM, I sent you a fairly descriptive message about some of the things that I've changed up and added to my process that have helped out my recordings so much........I still got a ways to go, but I'm very happy w/ my improvements over mixes from a year ago.....

Joro - thanks for checking it out.....I actually have made those changes but not reposted, as it was a pretty subtle change that I'm trying to trust my own ears on.......thanks for checking it out.....
