From Mackie's website about their new mixers:

Delivering the premium goods.
The Onyx 1220, 1620 and 1640 start with Mackie’s new Onyx mic preamps, which meet or surpass any standalone mic preamp on the market in terms of pure fidelity and head-room (and yes, we have the specs to prove it). Next up is our completely new Perkins EQ circuitry, a “neo classic” 3- and 4-band design which gives you the sweet musicality of British EQ with greater filter control and minimum phase shift (plus a true hardware EQ bypass). This analog brilliance is paired with a full-featured discrete Auxiliary section, a completely redesigned mix bus and summing amp section, and a built-in Talkback section with onboard mic. (Because Mackie mixers are still made for the real world of mixing, not just audio testing equipment.)

Now let ther be no more arguments over who has the best pre-amps. It is Mackie!!!! Their new pres meet or exceed ANY pre-amp on the market. Yes, even Neve cannot compete anymore.

Do they have Dobly?

And do they go up to 11?

No, no Dobly here.

No, 10 is the max. There is no 11 on anything. 10 is a nice even number, not like 11 which is a not-so-nice odd number so you can't go half-way without fractional numbers. Imagine fractional numbers on a pre-amp?

You could have jokes like "Does your pre-amp go to 10?"

" No, it goes to 11.5!"

Not too funny, really.

Wow, Mackies with a personality!

I think they are comparable (or will be in a few days). Gotta give those Behringer guys a little time to copy the new shit.

I think the 16 channel will list for about 1500. Not too bad, if it's really 'better than neve' pres.

You are either; incredibly subtle in your slyness, have no sense of humor or were born after 1980.

No, I get it. I saw the movie. The best way to kill a joke is to say"I don't get it", get it?

Before you trash it, maybe you should wait and see how they perform. Mackie makes decent equipment for the price and Keith Olsen has done some great things for them. The D8B was a step up in quality and the new DxB looks like it may be a great deal. I'm not a mackie user, I prefer vintage gear, but for those on a budget it's a nice alternative to the B word.

As for the marketing hype, duh, they have to talk up a product, if they came out and said "The new Onyx preamp is okay, and it will work for many project and home studios," they would kill the product before it hit the shelf.

Later,
musik
