I bought my first PL-76 Condenser Mic when I was 18 yrs old. I was a year into my first band. I had been using our Bass players extra Shure SM-58 for vocals.
He suddenly got a burr up and quit the band leaving us without a bass player, and Me without a Microphone. We solved both problems when the the band leader handed me the old bass players guitar and told me I was the new Bass player. I found out the bass player owed him money, and the band leader was my Brother-in-law..
I still needed a mic and drove to our local music store.
I wanted another SM58 but the salesman asked me to mic-check the 58 and a new mic, the EV PL-76. The difference was amazing, like a plow horse and a Kentucky derby winner!
The PL-76 was crisp, smooth with great low end, and proximity effect control!
Fast forward from 1978 to today, I still have that PL-76 I tried every single 76 like the Pathetic 76-A to the PL77-B but the batteries were getting hard to find.
Everything changed when I bought a small flashlight from EbAy that came with batteries. They were the 14500 (same size and diameter as an AA battery!!
I tried it in the old PL-76 and there was my old friend sounding as well as it used to! Plus, all I had to do was recharge it. I carried a fully charged Spare with me.
Now I am 63 years old and still Rocking.... My last gig was 2 weeks ago.... NEVER let anyone tell you that you are too old to perform!
I've even been inducted into a couple states R&R Hall of Fames.....
Peace and Love to All

Well! Stapp me vitals! Here's me thinking that low sensitivity vocal capacitor mics were a very recent invention?
They certain do not seem at all common being overshadowed by the all conquering SM858. Such mics, having a much smoother, flatter frequency response should make feedback control easier? I have found this,...

It refers to the "A" variant which you deprecated, why? It takes phantom power so avoids the battery issue.

I am now going to see if the mic is known of over here in Limeyland!

WOW I'm surprised to get replies on this thread!
The Battery I found are available online. Just do a Google OR EbAy search. You will find 4 EBL 14500 Batteries for about $12.00.
I have re-charged the battery I use in my PL-76 at least 80 times. Tt has never failed or discharged on me during a full night.
Ebay also sells the EBL 3.7 Volt batteries I use for just a few bucks!
The PL-76A is re-wired a bit to use an AA 1.5v battery.
They sound good until you compare them side by side with the PL76 with the original Battery, or the EBL 14500 battery.
I also have a PL-77B This Mic is amazing! It not only can be used with the original battery they are PHANTOM powered, and have a Bass roll-off
switch for recording, and vocal use. I have found them selling for $60-$80.00
I also want everybody that reads my original post to know, I love Shure products! To this day I carry an SM-58 and an SM-57 for backups!
I saw a band member pound a nail back into a stage step one night!!
We were performing and he caught his shoe on the nail nearly tripping him! He put his SM-58 back on his mic stand after pounding the nail back in! He is still using the same SM58 30 years later!!
Peace and Love,
Orion

Hi Dave! My Girlfriend and soon to be Wife is from Rugby UK..
The factory Electro-Voice PL76-A Is NOT phantom powered unless someone
re-wired it sometime in the past. That mic was AA battery powered when it was originally sold.
47 years of using them will prove me correct.
Cheers..

Ah, it was the "A" variant that took spook juice and pulled about 4-5mA according to that link.

"Rugby" eh? Caused me a lot of grief decades ago from their stupendously powerful transmitter!

So you are saying the A Variant you have uses a AA Battery? Mine is a “A” Variant that says ‘Reduced Rating’ if you use an AA Cel battery - I am going to us
the 4.5 Volt 600 mAh Battery due to the extra power maximizing the microphone.

Just don't forget to flip the switch off during breaks and at the end of the session, or night.
If you don't you'll have a dead battery the next time you use it!

I also wanted to let the folks out there that love the Sonic properties of the PL76 for crisp highs & smooth mids, plus proximity effect and workability of a Shure Sm58 or 58 Bets
on the low end and that beautiful boost in lows an SM58 give when you go from a couple inches to right on and touching the grill.
I have been using (You may want to take notes here!!)
about 20 years ago I took an AKG D-3800 in on a trade, It is the best thing I have ever done on a trade!
The D-3800 has a frequency response of (40 hz-21000 khz!) it pretty much matches the PL-76 but without the hassle of Battery or Phantom power.
The reason I love it so much is that it is a Dynamic Mic with excellent feedback rejection, plus it handles the strongest voices without any distortion!
There is also a wireless add-on option.
The D-3800 has been discontinued but there are usually ones on EbAy for sale.
These come with a beautiful, lined Aluminum case. the mics are made in Germany and the quality cannot be questioned!
