Nah... "up in this piece" is the whiteboy version...

Push,

Will try to answer your question. No offense, but I am not too sure if I understand it, but here goes.

As I understand it, you are looking for advice on a PC. You have the impression that AMD64 is the way to go.

Not necessarily.

If you have $3K to spend (and please don't tell me that you got it by pimping 12yr olds or anybody else) you should only need to invest $1K in the computer. AMD XP processors are fine, focus on getting a great mobo (incl. firewire on the mobo), having a 120GB HDD for your apps, Western Digital 74GB 10,000rpm HDD for your music, a DVD burner for backups, a UPS, and two monitors. They don't NEED to be LCDs, 19" conventional are fine. Put the rest of your funds into a decent preamp (DMP-3?), some more mics, a pair of solid monitors (Wharfdale?), and improving your studio. For a soundcard you might consider the M-Audio 1010LT.

Good luck.

This kid is willing to learn, so teach him something.

I think we are and it's a far more valuable lesson than how to spend his "hustlin'" money.

True - But keep in mind that you need to be VERY careful with CRT's in a recording area - One of the most frequent and nasty problems I get in here is "monitor whine" from video monitors. No one notices it, because it's in the room with you anyway. Your ears tend to ignore it after a short period of exposure.

It's "reasonably" easy to notch out in the mixing (or mastering) phase, but with multiple monitors at different refresh rates, it can get very nasty.

Just something to think about... :D

man, i feel like i've participated in a thread like this... deja vous anyone? tedluk?

Yeah, but how come when I simply asked the other guy if it was more difficult to go out of his way to talk like that everyone jumped all over me?

I just don't understand the whole thing. It's not like these people seem to be stupid. (Well, the jury is still out on the other guy). But their posts read like they wrote it first in English and then translated it into raplish.

Ted

i hear ya. someone's got to tell them that speaking in such a way won't get them anywhere, especially if they think they want to be in the BUSINESS of recording or running a label. the way i see it, they either learn from what advice they are given and become contributing members of society (or at least this board), or they are offended and keep on keepin on with the ignorance. chances are with the latter, they'll stay away from here.

John,
Once again, thank you. I would have had no ideas that the monitors needed to be at the same refresh rate.

Too cool for school.

Don't you hate it when threads go bad?

I think our young friends are forgetting that a computer system is only as good as its software. 1K for the *computer* is fine, but what software are we talking about?

If they're making beats they're going to need Recycle for making loops well, and they'll need an audio arranger/MIDI sequencers so they can take advantage of VST's... I'd recommend Cubase SX. Right there is another 600 bucks.

Plus if they're serious about 'making a dent in music' they should at least get the UA Studio Pak... another 500 bucks. Another smart investment is Waves Renaissance or Waves in general. Too bad Waves Diamond Native is 2850 bucks now... that's some serious "hustlin'".

I think the software is more important than the specs of the computer you are getting, although that is important as well--just not *AS* important.

Fo shoozle. :)

Oh, OK. I frown on Ebonics, or Rap speak or whatever the hell they want to call it nowadays. It just hurts my ears to listen to it. And it makes me sick to see organizations trying like mad to promote the education and advancement of African Americans or Blacks, or whatever the term of the moment is, just to see them turn around and purposely speak this way, and refer to other African Americans who are trying get an education and doesn't speak this way as "being white". I don't want to turn this into a political argument (there is a thread for that here), but it's time we all wise up. Education doesn't make you white, black or skyblue-pink. It makes you smarter. And that's what you need to succeed in this world...
