Hey Franco. :)

If you download the Digital Audio Workstation ( DAW ) known as Reaper and read through the manual it actually teaches you a fair amount about digital recording and mixing in the process.

The manual links you to a downloadable practise session with music files to play with.

You can start learning this while you are considering the next stage of your process which is acquiring an Audio Interface ( superior to your onboard sound card )

There's some good stuff on Youtube also, the basics of gear, placement, that kinda thing.

I see alot like Cubebase and Sonar 8 which one of these is good to start with and are there any other's better to use for a beginner

As CFox said, REAPER. Those programs you've listed are hundreds of dollar (last time I checked), Reaper is only $50 and you can download the full uncrippled program to try before you buy. It is a simple, easy-to-use DAW program that will more than get you started in recording, it'll be the only program you need as far as tracking/VST hosting/mixing/mastering.

Reaper

There site is down right now...that happens once in a while...they are probably doing maintenance on the site however Reaper is your best choice.

Site should come back up shortly.

A lot times when you buy an audio interface it'll come with a software bundle that offers the limited edition versions of recording software.

I bought the Emu tracker interface which came with a software bundle. It offered Cubase 4LE which kept locking up my pc,Sonar 6 LE,& Ableton lite.It also offered Melodyne essential ans some other programs.

I thought Abelton was hard to work with and i didn't like the lay out. It's a good program for midi though i've heard.

I chose the Sonar LE out of the 3 and it works fine for what i'm doing.Cakewalk and most of the software companies will offer deals on upgrades after you register your software so you may not have to dish out hundreds of dollars.

I've never used Reaper but lots of folks hear like it and i've never read anything bad about it.

I agree you should check out the tweak site. Before you buy an interface you'll need to know what you're goals are,how many inputs you'll need, etc. There's many choices out there but i'd reccomend an interface that allows recording in 24 bit.

I have used sonar since the start, I loved it so much I spent a decent amount of cash to buy Sonar 8.5 producer. One of the interfaces I bought came with cubase, It seemed so kindergarten compared to sonar.

Basically it comes down to what type of music you are interested in and how much money you want to spend. Different DAW's accel at different things.

Also if this is something you want to get serious about you may want to look into industry standards and get into software that is most widely used by professionals in which case Pro Tools would be the best choice, of course you would have to buy a slimmed down version.

What instruments do you play?
Are you looking to record one track at a time or maybe a full band with a fully mic'd drum kit?
Are you big into synths??
What are your computers specs?
What is your budget for the entire setup?

With this information people could better advise you.

For now my first suggestion: Go online and read reviews for all of the software that has been mentioned in this thread, learn some of the termanology(sp?) people are using. Always always always read what other people have experienced online, and learn to filter out BS.. manufacturors have and will hire people to post reviews all over the web.

Sorry in advance for the bad spelling.. Apparently the fact that I accel at math means my english sucks.

Yep, as FunkDaddy said above. Do what CFox says. :)

That doesn't sound like Cubase SX<whatever>. I'm betting that was one of the old kindergarteny versions that come free with hardware sometimes. You'll rarely get a full version of the full package with any hardware. It's definitely not kindergarten. In fact I'd say it was the opposite.

Thanks

Chaos is only great if it is done with Honest Intention. The Truth is Out There.

Wear a black trench coat and have a trilby dipped over your left eye, and sunglasses, even at night. Knock twice only. Carry an umbrella draped over your right arm and have $1000 in small bills in a McDonald's bag in your left. Speak slowly.

Report back... :D

Nice thanks...

As I sit here in my 12th floor desk at the window (just moved here and snaffled the window seat with some brazen opportunistic thinking) overlooking Darling Harbour in Sydney and a very big cruise liner which is moored just down apiece at the same spot where the Pope landed just over 2 years ago.

I can report that it's a lovely blue day out there, a few clouds but warm, and I'm willing the window cleaners to come down past me and clean my pane (they're about 2 panes away but it's a 30 storey building so it may take some time) so I can see even more clearly...

The cruise liner has a monster screen on it which I can clearly see from my desk - it seems to be about 2 decks high and is currently, for reasons unknown, playing a Kylie Minogue clip...

To my left is the Amex building, an interesting structure in grey with bright orange sticks stuck on the outside...

Soon, I must stop writing here and commit gainful employment...

How's autumn?

Cool with that description it's almost like being there Armistice.

Autumn here in New Hampshire? ..... Cold wet/rainy grey ..... but just wait a few minutes and the sun may be out.

Around here we have 9 months of winter and 3 months of bad sledding! :laughings: ..... that's my favorite description of New Hampshire.
