Someone had to judge it's sound quality with out even hearing it.
I have a JoeMeek VC1Q and a SC2.2 and they are the most quiet pieces in my rack.

Interesting, dont see too many preamps with switchable distortion and phantom power. At first it is billed as an instrument pre but then it has the mic features.

Gargamel, I have a VC3Q and a VC6 and with hotter output mikes like the
Studio Projects C1 and the Shure Beta 57 the Meeks sound quiet enough
for at least project level/pro demo recordings-in addition to having
excellent hearing that is!

I wish that they had come out with a "current sense" model of the VC6Q,
a VC6QS, in addition to the "new model" like they did with the MQ3 for
the VC3Q as they already had a loyal fan base.

I'm just guessing, but I think they went this way due to problems people have with adjusting an optical compressor.
The one knob compression approach is great if you
have no experience with a Meek and just want to rock.
If it's as good as a VC6Q, we'll have to see.
Otherwise, it looks like it's a foot switchable VC6Q with a CS pre, variable opto-distortion, and more flexible EQ.
I want to check one out as a live mic pre.
The foot switchable distortion should be fun live.
My sound man should hate this...
I'm also hoping VC6Q's go dirt cheap on EBay now....
I'd love to send my signal from a POD to one....

I love playing devils advocate. Meek makes some really cool stuff. I had a bad experience with an ebay purchase.....every time the compressor kicked in, even at the mildest settings there was this "bzzzzz" sound. You could barely hear it, but it bothered the crap out of me. (vc3q)

garg, you're right about noise. I sometimes use the enhancer in my meekbox to hone in on and reduce the noise the unit itself generates!!! Love the sound though...

the only time i have had a problem out of noise in my vc6q is when i have had the out put gain to high (way in the red) and the compresser poured on too thick. Alan said that you have to have the meter in the red for the compresser to work right. I have found that there is a fine line between in the red "just right" and "too far" in the red.
when i get the gain right (pre gain making the "clip" light blink a little and the post gain barely in the red) the vc6q is extreamly quiet.
