I recently set up a studio in a spare bedroom (you can see it here: https://homerecording.com/bbs/gener...g-display/new-bedroom-studio-pictures-337488/). That turned out to be much too small. I recorded a song that I was happy with, but we were crawling over each other to do it.

My awesome wife suggested that I move to the living room addition on the other end of the house. I went from a 9x14 studio/control combo to a 14x22 control room with a 7x11 recording booth. I could also track in the bigger room if I need a more open sound. Here are some pictures of the control room. What do you guys think? The booth will be done soon too.

Nice looks like a good start. Lucky that your wife let you move into the living room.

Those moveable boards don't seem like they would be much help in those positions. I like the look though. Seems way too tidy. Probably to do with just setting it up though. Wait until you've been using that room a while longer. =P

Think I should put a rack up somewhere. My interface just hangs off the top of my bass amp at the mo. The firewire cable isn't quite long enough to reach to the computer on the other side of the desk. =P

Yeah, I'll find a way to clutter it up. That whole left wall is built in cabinets and drawers though, so it may be tough. The gobos are there for early side reflections. Ethan says tame those and the ones above the mixing position, then hang as many bass traps as you can. This room has few spaces for bass traps, but I got in 3 2'x4' traps in wall to ceiling corners (the 3rd one is on the back wall).

I did a test with and without the gobos. I played a snare drum sample through the monitors and placed a condenser mic at the mixing position. You could hear the difference between the two recordings. There was extra reverby garbage without the gobos. Not good reverby garbage either. If I can actually hear a difference without using some silly test waves or gadgets, that's a big difference. I'm sold. BTW, they are filled with 3.5" of Ultratouch denim insulation, as is the cloud. The bass traps are 2" Roxul Rockboard 60, which is 6 lbs per square ft.

Sean: yes, I am very lucky. This was actually the reason we bought this house instead of one with a basement. I had first tried to get this room to be a living room/studio combo. That didn't work well for either purpose. Well, we've been here 4 years now and nobody ever uses this room. Even when we have company, nobody goes in there. So we're ditching the combo and going 100% studio.
