Ok, I am wanting to get into sequencing as I have a decent computer with good soundcard and memory, so I am thinking I should make use of that stuff rather than go out and get a multitrack recorder/analouge recording thingy.

What I really need to know am I right going down this route(computer) and if so the next question is what software do I need to record tracks individually as I at the moment am a lone muso. I guess a sequencer, and on that note just downloaded a demo version of cakewalk (not for me it is'nt). Found it really really hard to understand, I have a B.A.(hons)degree and feel pig poop thick. It was mind blowingly complicated for me. So, what would be a good starting point - or is there a d.v.d or easy to follow book of sorts which could go hand in hand with say calkwalk or whatever other one is best and user(idiot) jargon free(er) friendly. Many thanks.

^What he said.

Sequencer choice is very subjective and personal. What works for one person is anothers nightmare.

GO TO THE BOOKSTORE.
Every Barnes&Noble and Borders has a music section with LOTS of sequencer manuals. Read through 'em in the cafe and see if the workflow of any of them catches your eye.

DOWNLOAD DEMOS.
Nearly everything out there can be downloaded and tried out legally.
One place to start:
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/lic/Demo/AUDIO_SEQUENCERS/

THERE'S FREE STUFF OUT THERE TOO:
Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net (multi-track with VST support)
Wavosaur: http://www.wavosaur.com/ (a stereo audio file editor with VST support)\
Kristal: http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/
Other freebies and shareware: www.hitsquad.com

Another great option is REAPER at http://www.cockos.com/reaper/ (It's $50 but runs for free until you get guilty enough to pay for it...)
I use Reaper and highly reccomend it...

And you can go out to any Barnes&Noble or Borders and pick up "Computer Music" magazine - they have a full FREE studio suite in every issue's DVD, including sequencers, plugins and tons of audio samples. (GIVEAWAYS TOO: November 2006 they gave away a full copy of SamplitudeV8SE worth $150, November 2007-on the racks Dec in the US- they gave away SamplitudeV9SE. It pays to watch 'em for giveaways...)

Thankyou kind sir!

Thanks Tim for all the cool tips and links.
