i finally got myself a new guitar. i was looking at the godin lg but i missed buying it by a few hours and then this weekend past there was a sale at long and mcquade in toronto and i picked up a epiphone es 335 ebony its so nice. i had a tele squire and it makes the tele a put away for resale guitar. the epiphone rocks. ill let you know how it works.

Glad your happy with your new guitar. I know it's a step up from your Squire Tele and I'm sure you'll make some great sounds with it.

Glad to hear that you're so pleased with that new Samick.;):D

I know everyone gets a kick out of the fact that Samick makes more guitars than any other company in the world, but doesn't that just say that they have ZERO quality control...

And I would rather have my guitar say Epiphone than Spamick any day...

At least Epiphones are licensed copies, Samick just rips everyone off!

As for TheGuitarMan, I know you probably have a closet of Collings and Taylors and 1930 Martins and such, but not everyone is as lucky as you, and everyone knows that Epiphones are crap, I mean Wilco uses them, and they suck. Right?!?!?!

Just lay off...

By the way are you Les Paul, or maybe Leo Fender reincarnate I mean you are THE GuitarMan

Why lay off? It's too easy to make fun of Sami...Epiphones.

No, I don't have a lot of vintage guitars, but I know crap when I play it. There are better instruments for musicians on a budget.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Epiphone guitars. I have a Dot and although it's not an ES-335 Like BB King, it is very close to what John Lee Hooker played the last years of his life and it sounds pretty good thru my old Fender amp.

P.S.
I do have a few ventage guitars.

So What's Wrong With Epiphone?

I have an Epiphone BB King Lucille.

Beautiful finish and very good build quality. Clearly not as collectible as the Gibson version - but then I paid about a third of the Gibson price. It is however made from the same timber as the Gibson.

As with all Epis, the electronics and hardware are not on a par with their Gibson counterparts.

Furthermore, Gibson told me the Lucille is made by Aria guitars, NOT by Samick.

Please don't denigrate yourself, GuitarMan, by entering into a tired, pointless argument about one manufacturer versus another. If you know of "better instruments for musicians on a budget" then do us the courtesy of naming them.

Heritage! I love these guitars. A used Heritage is an awesome value. Heritage LP, ES-335 and 336 are around a grand (unless you get the upgrades). And used...it depends on the guitar but it's a gonna be a very good deal. I for one would kick my own but if I chose a new Epi over a used Heritage. Heck, I wouldn't choose Gibson over Heritage unless I somehow happened to stumble upon some schmuck who would sell me his 59' Paul for 500 bucks...but I would feel really guilty.

There are quite a few unknown luthiers who make great guitars for little $$$.

Just a comment about Samick.........
I'm a piano tuner of 25 years experience and I do about 1000 pianos a year. Samick makes a first rate piano ( a lot of Baldwins are actually Samick, also Wurlitzer, Kohler and Cambell, Chickering and several others....all Samick) , and it's a hell of a lot harder to build a good piano than a guitar.
Also, why tell someone who's proud of their new guitar that you thinks it's a piece of crap. You haven't played it and guitars vary in quality enough that nothing is absolute. I've seen great no-names and Gibsons or Fenders that were crap. Ultimately it's what you do with it.
For the record....I have a custom built with EMG's and a matching Paduak (sp?) neck and body ; a custom shop Strat, a standard Tele and an Epi Firebird. I like 'em all.

Hey Bob! How's it going in the band with your doughtier?

I don't think TheGuitarMan knows what he's talking about. He keeps throwing around all these expensive names, but he can't afford to buy an EQ pedal. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years and I've never even seen a Heritage much less played one, so I don't make comments about them.

It's going good. We're definitely creating a buzz locally so that's pretty cool. It looks like all of our gigs this week are gonna be cancelled by hurricane Lili though. Coulda used the money, ya' know?

How's Bdgr doing? Did he recover from his bike disaster?

I don't know TheGuitarMan but it always drives me crazy when people make generalities about brands without taking into account what they are appropriate for. Does my Epi Firebird sound as good as my custom with the EMG's? Of course not....but it plays very good and I have no hesitation in taking it on stage. And in my case, it's certainly not a matter of it being all I can afford. I really like the thing, although I am gonna stick some EMG's in it because I think they are the best sounding pick-ups I have ever used.

Bdgr's fine, he only fell on his pride.

That's too bad about the your gigs. I'd try to make a trip down and see you some time, but I have an unpaid traffic ticket in New Orleans and I'd hate to get locked up.

I'm actually gonna be in your direction some next year and the band's supposed to possibly play in Austin so we'll eventually get to jam.

Ok....sorry grachus (is that like Bachus but with grass instead of wine?) Won't hi-jack your thread anymore. What kind of amp are you running that Epi through?

Fuckin Gibsons are OVERPRICED anyway. They are finally getting smart and starting to lower their prices. Why do you think that hardly any bands play lesters anymore, fuckers are too expensive. The kids cant afford that shit, thats why they go with Fenders. I mean, I am sure that a 58 lester is the shit, but damn Gibson sells a copy of that, calls it a relic and then asks you to bend over and pay $6000.00 for it.

Pretty much over it. My right elbow still hurts like hell when I move it wrong, but It doesnt hurt to bad to play, so it couldnt be too bad. I do hafta take breaks more often. I finished up the recording for that song for the movie, and I will finish mixit it tonight. Sat after my band practices or sunday I should be able to lay down some more keyboard parts on the colab.

Yeah, the embarrasment was the worst part. LUckily the bike didnt fare to bad, I broke its fall. Still have a pretty good bruise from the air cleaner pinning me between the bike and the asphalt.

Sounds like you got off fairly easy. Not as bad as when I had a head-on with a pick-up truck. Trust me...........don't do that. ;)

Just because i'm broke at the moment, doesn't mean I haven't played some great guitars. When am I throwing around expensive names? If you want expensive names I can give you expensive names. All i've mentioned are a little over a grand which is not that much when you think about how expensive similar yet inferior guitars are. I don't actually have to OWN expensive guitars to know what is good.

Alright, my fave entry level brands for electrics are Jay Turner and Dean. These are pretty much the best entry level imports you can get. I'm a little iffy on the Dean Avalanches (strat) though. The newer ones seem to be better quality but the older ones were made in China. I prefer Dean Strats over most Fender import Strats. Jay Turner makes some pretty cool Gibson copies. Alvarez makes some okay imports. I've played a few (very few) Schecter Diamond Series guitars that are pretty good.

If you like Epiphone well more power to ya, but I just don't see what all the fuss is about. I'd rather get a good used Heritage.

EDIT: 30 years ago the guys from Heritage were still working for Gibson. Also, Heritage doesn't advertise at all. Keeps costs down. They do have a few guitarists that try to get the word out. Bob Balsley, who writes guitars books for mel bay, lives around here. Heritage has only been around since Gibson moved out of Kalamazoo (to Nashville?). They wouldn't carry Heritage in any superstore.

Ed Roman has a guitar showroom in Las Vegas now. He should have some Heritage guitars there. Check it out if you're ever in Vegas. I think you can take a virtual tour of it at his website. www.edromanguitars.com
